I'm not counting any poultry on this yet given that Network Rail and predecessors have always justified not reopening on the grounds of 'costs'. The line could have reopened to passengers years ago if the monies already spent on negative consultancy reports had been put into the infrastructure.

Let's hope for some common sense at last. SE Northumberland needs a direct rail service to Manors and Newcastle Central via Newsham, and a Metro connection at Northumberland Park. It's just a shame there seems no way to put a passenger line back into a town centre with a population of over 36k people!

The Jocks already get into Newcastle through the back door, via Kilmarnock, Dumfries and Carlisle; shades of the NBR Newcastle to Hawick via Hexham trains.

There was talk a couple of years ago of ScotRail introducing a new Glasgow - Newcastle stopper via the ECML which would have transformed the local service. We desperately need someone to do it; East Coast and Northern are not interested, so come on ScotRail; reintroduce Ashington and Blyth trains and start running frequent Newcastle to Glasgow stoppers via Berwick.

There are so many "ifs" in that report that the Spartans would love it. It would be great to see this line reopened but I think they will artificially inflate the costs are reject it as "too expensive".

Just realistic Bill. Look at Leamside. And in the case of Haxby and Strensall stations they have done umpteen "studies" and all that happens is that thousands of pounds gets shifted into the bank accounts of consultancy firms. If they wanted to reopen it they would just do it.
