Re: The end for Miles Beevor
Attached a pic of 60026, languishing at Carlisle Kingmoor and en route to Crewe to be cut up. I'd travelled from Newcastle that day - September 17th 1966 - hoping to see the remaining Clan at 12A ( some hope!) In these days of the internet it's amazing to remember how much info had to travel by word of mouth then. Anyhow, no-one told me that Clans and Royal scots were just history by Autumn 1966, along with much else that had been such a regular feature. So, amongst all the usual Stanier and BR Standard stuff I was delighted to see '26, even if she was in a hell of a state. Now if I could have saved a streak it would have been Silver Link; what else?
Re: The end for Miles Beevor
The answer to this query can be found in the RCTS Locomotives of the LNER Part 2A and Yeadon's Register. 60026 was not cut up at Crewe.
Combining the information in the two books, after withdrawal from BR No 60026 was sold in 2/1966 to Motherwell Machinery & Scrap but the sale was cancelled and the engine returned to Perth on 2/8/1966. 60026 was then taken to Crewe Works and parts used for the restoration of 60007 (Yeadon). RCTS states that the three pairs of coupled wheels on 60026 being in better condition than those of 60007 an exchange was effected. The remains of 60026 were then sold for scrap to Hughes, Bolckow of Blyth (9/1967) (Yeadon).
