Not sure if you'd have known him Micky, or whether he left being WGC lad before your time, but Colin Reeve also end up as a Eurostar Driver; one of originals I think. Often used to see him, still accompanied by his bicycle, somewhere on KX Suburban station, passing through in going on or off shift, presumably at Waterloo, so s'pose he still lived somewhere in the KX Suburban district.

Hmm I visited Kings Cross in Oct-2000 on holiday for Australia.
I found it sterile and very boring, lot's of GNR smelly diesels and little else

My days at the Cross remind me of J50's N2's and all the Pacifics that came and went

I hated the Thompson A2's they looked too much like a GWR Thing with that front end with that horrible Thompson equal Drive

Then came the dreadful Deltics and all the other boxes on wheels with no soul

I suppose you can guess, my interest died when Steam did

I sympathise (apart from your GWR reference, best ignored!)

But I remember in steam days at the Cross there was an old guy who complained how boring Kings Cross used to be - "nothing but Ivatt Atlantics".

Had he mentioned Waterloo I could have asked him whether he meant the station or the battle.

G'Day Gents

At least in the 70's (diesel age) it was busy, always something moving, DMU's, 31's on suburban stock,York Rd open and being used, diesel fumes pouring out of the Hotel curve tunnel as a 31 pounded up the bank inside the tunnel pushing the fumes out, walking around the milk dock, in daylight and being in a different world, engine movements, in Kings Cross pass depot, watching ECS being shunted around by No 1 shunt, Deltic's being started up at the buffer stops, and seeing the huge pall of smoke drift along the curved roof of Lewis Cubbit, Life at the 'Cross' did'nt die when steam ended but it got a damn sight boring when the diesels went and the electric's took over.

Got told by one of my ex BR colleagues recently that during the current works at Kings Cross, workmen had discovered a brickup room containing brand new BR uniforms, no idea what happened to them though.

Thanks John, as you say some really nostalgic shots here, especially of the Cambridge Buffet 'racing' ?? through Finsbury Park, complete with Gresley buffet car in tow. The Eastern Region really got a lot of good work out of the Class 31s but I don't recall them ever being overly fast on these trains, certainly not on the down. Finsbury Park station hadn't altered much when I was there earlier this year, still a grim and unattractive sort of place.
A topper is proper if the train's a non-stopper!

Re- uniforms, thats where my 1975 issue uniform went?? :lol:

Good pic of a 31 at Finsbury Pk, as you say, 8 coaches on the Cambridge Buffet, was just a bit to much for them, much better with a 47. It also shows the old GN awnings being removed, it looked like a station when it still had them.
