70013 Oliver Cromwell
Steam at last in Haslemere.Saw 70013 pass through on Monday morning at 10.30am on a Steam Days special to Yeovil-what a magnificent sight-first mobile Brit I have seen in preservation(saw plenty in BR days).I went back to see it on the return trip as it stopped at platform 3 to be watered at about 8.20pm.Great turnout of people to see it-most of them were on the station. As automatic ticket barriers are being installed at the moment that will ,I ,suppose put an end to'fans' getting up close to locos on future stops.

You should be able to get a platform ticket.Remember-they are not allowed to stop you continuing your hobby.Check the guidelines with Network Rail, and the Transport Police. Also,if you haven't already-sign the photography petition on this board.Make your voice heard!
Bring back Ferrybridge station!

There's usually a way. See, for starters, Railway Byelaw 13(2) at the DFT websiteFerrybridge Flyer wrote:They are not allowed to stop you continuing your hobby
So - did anyone dare tell Stephenson, "It's not Rocket science"?

interesting, but i notice nxec is not mentioned in that list of operating companies ,does that mean they can make their own rules or do they have to follow gner rules.Bullhead wrote:There's usually a way. I can't give a definitive response but strongly suggest you work on the basis that these are applicable throughout the network.third-rail wrote:interesting, but i notice nxec is not mentioned in that list of operating companies ,does that mean they can make their own rules or do they have to follow gner rules.

Re: 70013 Oliver Cromwell
I spotted 1948-1954, when Brits were very rare in North Notts. Oliver came down to Swanage last week, and I went there by car and steam to get that thrill of seeing a Brit again. Oliver was in a siding by the fire station, with only 2 other bearded weirdos nosing around. I took dozens of photos of detail, and put them into a 'scrap-book' webpage, see www.eyemead.com/70013.htm Doing this has made me familiar with every inch of Oliver, and has led me into more research about Walschaerts, injectors, crests, history, renaming etc etc.
The whole process has been most pleasurable and I can recognise most parts of OC when I close my eyes.

Re: 70013 Oliver Cromwell
It certainly is. I've tried a few panned shots myself, mostly of diesels - luck of the draw rather than by design - but that one turned out very well. Have you submitted it to any of the magazines? If I was a photo editor, I'd consider it (in my humble opinion...).
Re the byelaws, surely it depends how they are interpreted? If you have someone who is unashamedly using their common sense and judgement, most photographers will be OK, but if you get some [bureaucratic little jobsworth who loves to spoil other people's enjoyment] then that is likely to lead to trouble... Sadly there are a few photographers that behave badly or irresponsibly, but most of us don't - so don't penalise us because of the behaviour of a few 'bad apples'.

The Byelaws were published in July 2005 and since NXEC came into being after that, that is why they are not mentioned in the list.
Re: 70013 Oliver Cromwell
Excellent photos of 70013 John, the detail of various fittings, not usually closely observed, is most interesting
I know it's pedantic, but hope you'll excuse me. On leaving Norwich 32A W/E 16/9/61 70013 then moved on to March 31B . A number of Britannia's were allocated there and used to appear at Doncaster, York and in the Leeds area C1962, finally moving to the LMR - as stated in your post -in 1963.

Re: 70013 Oliver Cromwell
Pardon my ignorance - can anyone tell me - what is that bit of plumbing on 70013, port side, just in front of the forward facing cab window, with 7 pipes connected to it, see a thumbnail of it on www.eyemead.com/70013.htm , the exhaust steam injector is on the starboard side, so what's this???
Re: 70013 Oliver Cromwell
As far as I can tell from the thumbnail the pipework in front of the left hand side of the cab on 70013 links from the main steam supply manifold on top of the firebox to the vacuum brake ejector steam valves and thence along the boiler side and into the smoke box to be exhausted up the chimney. There should also be a steam pipe connection from the blower valve in the engine's cab. The BR Standard designs had much of their equipment and pipework on view ,the idea being to provide easier accessability Hope this helps.
