Well Sascha has done it again. He had planned some more LMS planked meat containers but first sent through a basic shape for a plywood model which could be a BR FM design to D3/205. Adding planks would produce the LMS models. He posted a draft .stl on Sunday night for me to check it out. When I checked the dimensions in my slicer I realised it was pretty close to the LNER D25 frozen meat containers. There were differences in the strapping at the corners and around the hinges, and the fenders are an entirely different shape. I half jokingly said he could make you guys very happy if he changed all those details. Well this morning he sent this through! I can see a lot of Parkside Conflat S kits being built soon. 500 of these were built, 400 of them c1935/6 if I recall correctly. I am not sure if this is the same version Jonathan Welleans had scratchbuilt a master of elsewhere on this forum. Hats off to Sascha once again. The man is one man container making machine.

Thanks for highlighting these containers carlislecitadel2.

Are the LMS FM containers on Thingiverse?

Many thanks,

The meat containers I made (still available from Mr. King) are to D5 and only a very small number were constructed - 20 or 30 IIRC.

He has loads more so its worth checking going through his site. There are buffers and brake gear, loco lamps, etc, as well as lots of BR wagons. Ignore the LMS weltrol thats up there right now as its not a great model and he has just sent me a vastly superior file to check out and he will be uploading that one soon and taking down the old one. It was realising what was available for free from Jonny and getting a friend to test print a couple of his designs that made me take the plunge and get a printer of my own. He has doubled the amount of files he has in that 6 months and new prints get added all the time. I have not had time to print half of what he and Sascha have designed let alone any of the military vehicles or buildings I have downloaded.

More good news from Germany. Mr Freudenberg liked doing the D25 FM meat container and upon hearing that you guys were keen on it, he has said he is starting to do a BM meat container to D18, 136 of which were built.
I have had bit of difficulty printing the D25 on my machine this week but hope to get a print out and photographed midweek - fingers crossed.

Mr Freudenberg's latest creation has arrived already. Gentlemen may I present the LNER BM to D18.
Sascha has also revised his D25 for me as my FDM would not print it fully, possibly an issue with the strapping not being manifold. I will be trying a test print of it tomorrow afternoon and, if that works, I will print the BM later that night. Fingers crossed.

Many thanks for the package of containers etc you very kindly sent me.
I will post pics when I get round to cleaning them up, at present I have only given them a coat of primer.

Hi Dave,
If you are at the primer stage you are still further on than me. I have not clened my prints up yet.
Sascha sent through the D18 ventilated meat container and I was able to start printing it last night. It took 19 hours but looks pretty good. I am pushing my printer to the limit with this and the LMS weltrol in my other thread. Unfortunately the corners of the print have curled up, a common problem with some of my prints. Its not an inaccuracy in the drawing but a recurring issue with FDM printers. Its usually a temperature or adhesion problem but this print followed straight on from the weltrol and D25 prints with the machine in action for nearly 35 hours straight, so the temperature inside its enclosure should have been warm enough. I can always load it into an open wagon rather than on to a conflat. This one is likely to end up in BR maroon.
Wih regards to drawing decals for LNER insulated containers, was the colour scheme a white ody with black lettering - like the LMS? In some pictures I have, the letters are more of a dark grey than black so I just want to make sure they were not another colour. I I know the GWR used red for instance on its Teavans. I'm 99% sure LNER insulated stock should be white with black letters but it would be nice if the knowledgeable folks here could confirm that for us.
We are still trying to get the D25 print to a standard we are happy with. My first test prints of it were problemaic due to encoding problems. Sascha modified the file to make it a 'solid' and it printed propely then, but I have a couple of queries about how the door was drawn and there has been much scrutiny of the picture of No.500 susequently as we try to decide how much detail should be raised and what should be flush or best represented by grooves.

And after a bit of cleaning up and a couple of thin coats of Railmatch plum red, the D18 now looks like this. You can see where the print curled at the bottom corners. On the next print, I am going to try and lift it off the build plate slightly and add supprts underneath to see if that stops it as the second D18 print had the same issue. The file is fine, its the print process as quite a few of my wagon bodies have the same issue. I am not sure what is causing this as the printer is in an eclosure and a large chest of drawers is between it and the door so no cold drafts should be crossing the build plate.
I might try and run a fibreglass brush or a file up and down the planks vertically to get rid of the layer lines which as showing.I might also replace the torpedo vents with cast ones.

Mr Freudenberg's D25 frozen meat container. We had a good bit of debate surrounding the doors. I do not think the raised areas were so pronounced on the earlier containers, but on the 1940s builds I believe they were. Compare the pics ofthese later builds with the pciture of D500 in Tatlow. I think this may partly have been due to needing a bit of reinforcing as thinner ply may have been used during and after the war as an economy measure. I'd be happy to hear from anybody with an opinion on this. Either way its a nice model. The BR built version of this design had extra vertical stapping mid way along each side, a strehthing fillet at the end of the horizontal strapping at each end of the container, and the moe universal style of fender. Plasticard could be added to this print to recreate that - provided Sascha does not do it first. He has other containers planned before revisiting this one.

Re livery for the Dia 18 Container . Tatlow only has a photo of one during the war period, it does'nt mention colour, I would suggest Red Oxide as it newly painted and appears to be too pale a shade for Dark Blue. I see no reason why the 18 would not have been originally White /Black lettering. There is a photo of a Dia 25 in White/Black lettering. Appears to be standard colouring as used on Refrigerator vans. They all vary however, in the layout of the lettering and wording.

Both Meat Containers used a specialised Container Wagon in the photos. The ones Jonathan Wealleans has produced a casting masters for in the past.

Steel and A type Containers finished. Roofs were the only bit that needed some work, a lot of lines to flatten off.

Just need to build a some wagons for them now !!.

Hi Mick,
Those finished models look fantastic. I’m glad you got the transfers resized in the end. I will let Sascha know you have got these finished as he will be delighted to see his designs being used.
Apologies for not being in touch but I have had a hectic week on call and last Saturday my printer refused to print plastic on the build plate preferring to put it around the nozzle instead. I have not had a chance to replace the nozzle yet. When I get home on Sunday night I might get a crack at it. This might be the time to switch to a 2mm nozzle to try some more detailed prints.

On a different tack, getting St Patrick’s day off, the better half and I drove down to the Game of Thrones Studio exhibition near Banbridge. There were some interesting exhibits on the planning and design of the buildings, jewellery, and armaments used from mock ups through to final versions produced. All very interesting from a modelling perspective, as were the timescales the designers had to work too. The armourers workbench is one exhibit and has a sword in mid production resting on a couple of jars of Alcad metal paints. They would be useful for the steel containers. Dremels and associated attachments, needle files, resin casting accoutrements, a hefty vice and other familiar tools to the railway modeller were strategically placed on the bench. Their rate of production of equipment would put most of us to shame. If you are ever over in Northern
Ireland, whether you are a fan of the show or not, it’s an interesting place to spend a few hours.
