I am just doing my first loco conversion using GK's resin parts.
I am building a Thompson A2/1.
I seem to have managed to retain most of the Bachmann A2 Cartazzi arrangement including the vertical wheel carrier and spring and sliders, though height reduced, and also the tender draw bar boss. The body is not weighted yet but it seems to run ok so far. I removed a lot of material from under the Bachmann V2 cab floor with a slight break through in one spot, but from the top side it looks mostly intact. let me know if you want me to try to post pictures. I have not done that here before.
It has not pulled a train yet so I guess it could still go wrong at that point ! Tom

Hi Vernon, you raise an interesting point.
The very first Ivatt tenders in the Doncaster tender list are certainly R22/23, and they have metal buffer beams and drag boxes.
The problem is however, that later, there are a couple of drawings in the list which are numbered and dated somewhat later than R22/3
There seems to have been an interesting period during the transitions between Stirling and Ivatt starting to design and build locos, and this is where the
problems seem to arise.
Stirling died in late 1895 but Ivatt did not join until March 1896, so during that period Matthewman ran the department. He had been Stirling's Loco accountant and was placed in the interim position for the short time. During that time, some locos and tenders were produced and toward the end, and with the introduction of what became LNER D4 there were a few locos that were built with tenders which we now consider to be "interim" tenders with some Stirling features like curved coal space, and also wooden beams. Sadly though we do not have all the relevant details to create a proper drawing, and also try to fit it in the lists in the correct order. However I do have some scraps so am looking at completing what I can.

Pithy comment Peebles, but a broader explanation would be useful.
My investigations into workshop practice at Doncaster shows that many things were done with a nod and a wink, not specific drawings that ever ended up in the lists that now exist at the NRM. Indeed certain things could not be properly described in a drawing, for instance works plates are a prime example.
There were a number of drawing offices at Doncaster, so it is quite logical that not all the drawings were collated in the way that would help us now, sadly.

This next image shows the material removed from the Bachmann V2 cab floor. I don't know if that is similar geometry to your resin V2 shell or not.
I used a dremel attachment and bit like this to keep the cuts flat, using wooden blocks on either side of the body to keep the base of the dremel attachment in the same plane as the body. (I actually used a larger diameter tool than this except for the corners but my work space has taken it hostage somewhere.) You can see int he first picture how the remaining material is very thin as you can see where I just broke through slightly. I would leave slightly more material next time.
This shows the retention of the draw bar boss, and also the diagonal cuts I used to transpose the steps forwards to get the right length for the A2/1.
You can also see it retains most of the weight at the rear of the chassis and also the mounting holes. I added some evergreen plastic strip into the back of the body and taped for the screws.
It runs well so far, though not tested under load yet. I have one 26 1/2 inch radius curve and also gradient changes which it handled fine.
You can see 2 depths of material removal, one so the A2 chassis fits, and the other so there is a little space for movement of the screw at the top of the wheel carrier. The retained A2 cartazzi arrangement behaved itself under the load of a train last night under the V2 cab floor.

I must offer my apologies to those who are waiting for resin items from me. Real work, home maintenance, attempts to finish off the new moulds and castings that I started over the Christmas period, plus the mysteriously rapid passage of time (even when I'm only trying to have a rest) have combined to cause me to make far less progress than I had confidently expected!
I have however managed a few useful things, including some fittings for those previously shown tenders and the deck/solebars/headstocks casting for Mr Weallans' conflats.
