I think it's very kind of him to suggest you use days off to go and play trains!!!Atlantic 3279 wrote:I'm surprised he hasn't posted this one on here himself, but to cheer you all up from Hattons gloom, here's another P2 being put through its paces. The video also shows the features and layout of Geoff's garden railway quite nicely. If the weather doesn't wreck my summer next year, I must pop over to play with his trains a bit more often.
Of course, he'll now have to build up a proper 1930s Aberdonian coaching set. He can't have that engine hauling LMS stock all of the time......
I can already hear his reply, it ends in "off".

Hi Peter, I'm afraid I may have damaged one side in removing it. If however I find them both and in reasonable nick, I'll send them onto you (free of charge - I've no plans to make a D49 with the rotary valve gear). It is a separate plastic moulding, I can add.45568 wrote:S.A.C. Martin wrote: Hi Simon,
Watching and enjoying your Bugatti P2 thread, I wondered what form the rotary valve gear moulding was. Is it a separate single plastic moulding?
It would appear to be ideal for my D49 Hunt project, the obvious two questions now being, do you still have it and do you want it? If not, I would love to take it off your hands!
Cheers,
Peter C.

Not will, but "hope to".
Bit fed up of this now.
I know it's Hornby that have given them this problem, but there's something wrong with Hattons basic system.
Straw, camels back and all that I've cancelled it.
(And will probably do likewise with the J15.)
Unbelievably, went to Hornbys' site and one will be with me next week for £124 including delivery.
Let's see......

That would be much appreciated Simon. I saw my first real D49 today at the GCR gala. I was not disappointed after waiting 63 years!!
Cheers,

Re: P2 update
Hi Everyone
Has anybody tried fitting the 'etched' nameplates that are supplied in the main range model?
Got mine out of the packet a few minutes ago for the first time - they're not really like any etched plates I've seen before although the edge does suggest they are etched and even has a minute tag on it to prove it. But the etching has no significant relief to it and appears like the brass colour is actually a painted - maybe varnished finish?
I won't be fitting them - the 'Coup de Grace' is they are about a 1 mm too short to cover the printed ones!
Darn now I'll have to order some proper ones!
Even with all the additional lining - I'm wondering if the main range model was worth the extra money after all I could have added all the lining - its not that difficult! I still have to get the knife out and remove the moulded handrails - 11 in all - there are even two very small ones moulded onto the valance in front of the cylinders. The only positive thing about this task is that the rear cab and front tender handrails are essentially where I can put lining once I've removed these as they are very close to the beading but then I'm going to have to be extremely careful not to damage the beading! I would have happily paid another 25 or so quid to have full wire handrails and sprung buffers!
I'm also intending to repaint the rear of the tender to get the lining in the correct position. BUT I find it difficult to match greens very well and the colour of 2001 is rather dark in my view.
Given what we came to expect from Hornby earlier with the up to date A4s and A1s I have to say there are some very disappointing aspects with the P2 and the Design Clever approach. At least the D16/3 and K1 are looking very good from what I can tell, apart from what looks like gold lettering on the black D16/3 - I emailed Simon K about this and he has referred it to Hornby's technical department.
I await with some trepidation the eventual arrival of the long awaited Book Law - will it compare well with the A1s which are so lovely?

No doubt like many others I ordered mine on the day it was announced. Still waiting for Hattons.

See the earlier quotes re Hattons. I have one on way from Waltons only £10 dearer .
Re: P2 update
Mine arrived today , good service too.
Lovely Loco 9 out of 10 for looks and runs well ,as to the Tender 3 out of 10 very poor compared to the earlier version used with Hornby's A3 's . As said earlier rear lining is way out of line and has moulded fittings and coal.
Hornby have supplied with all the wheels in Apple Green is this correct ? as all the Pacifics only had Green Drivers and Front Bogie . Slightly darker Green used by Hornby.
I have one spare New Type tender from a BR A3 tempted to relivery into LNER Green as it will be a vast improvement, the Green is the problem with doing this.
As to the Loco the Smokebox handrails and Dart will get sorted out. I personally will leave the Cab Handrails alone as not viable to replace them without wrecking the Livery. New etched Name and Works Plates to be fitted. The Name Plates supplied as "etched" by Hornby are plastic or very poorly made.

Re: P2 update
Well Mick, you ordered yours just after mine I think, but I'm wondering if I'm destined not to get one of these models, as the alleged first class post has failed to deliver the model several days later.
I have Waltons tracking number but all the Royal Mail website says is that the parcel is being "progressed" through their system, whatever that means.

Re: P2 update
Perhaps you're too close to blue box HQ for a red box to get through?
In my experience, the "progressed..." thing with Royal Mail doesn't seem to mean anything other than it has been scanned in at one end. It makes a nonsense of the term tracking half the time since by the time you see the status/location updated the parcel has arrived. On the bright side, I have rarely had parcels go missing completely even during some very active eBay trading several years ago. I'm sure your P2 will arrive eventually.
You could try going out. That usually triggers a parcel delivery!

Re: P2 update
That usually happens to me, when I'm waiting for a parcel or signed for package. I'm sure the Postie is hiding in the bushes across the street waiting 'til I go out, then calls. OK when I'm at work it can't be helped, but I've been on leave this last week and he called just after I'd gone out for a Doctors appointment, so I ended up with a P.O. red card when I got home.teaky wrote:Perhaps you're too close to blue box HQ for a red box to get through?

Re: P2 update
Some limited success with resin casting this weekend. Mulling over my options - I think I need to make a full front end master and then cast it. The cylinders are simply too wide and will need filing down for the streamlined front to fit properly. However, I'm fairly confident I can put it all together now. Getting closer.
Re: P2 update
Here's my P2 weathered and with all the detail bits added - it's never going around any curves now! I've replaced the drawbar with a home-made one for closer coupling. This is a little diorama I've done for my dad for his 70th birthday (it was in August so it's rather belated now :resent:) meant to depict a little bit of Haymarket shed. The only bit of photoshoppery is the smoky heat haze from the chimney and clearing some foreground clutter. I can't find many pics of CotN in service but some show her much dirtier than this and she seems to have been treated just like any other loco. If I'd had more time I would have liked to have added the inner handrail to the deflector and replaced the poor nameplates with proper etched ones.

Superb work. Really evocative of the time.
Best weathered P2 I've seen thus far by a long way.

Re: P2 update
More detail added to Smokebox.
Handles, new Handrail to top of box, extra Handrail to side deflector and Lampiron. Spencer Metal Buffers and Screw Coupling added to the buffer beam.
What has surprised me is the Tender.
Did C of N have a lower Tender height than the standard Pacific version ? Compared with a decent detailed Hornby Pacific Tender to the C of N version shows a huge difference in the height of the fairing . I haven't got the RCTS book for the P2 and Yeadon doesn't have a decent side on photo of C of N and doesn't mention anything relating to its Tender. The streamlined P2's had the normal height of Tender as can be seen in other photos therein.
