There was a time in the 19th century, when either Stirling or Ivatt was about to take over as CME, he walked the entire length of the main line (KX to Doncaster) and put a report about the state of the track, stating it was in appalling condition, and quoting to the board, that new and worn out track were being used indiscriminately along with odd lengths, on the main line on some of the fastest stretches of line !

it is said that after Ivatt had joined in 1896 he took a loaded pistol, and walked the whole main line, the reported to the board that he was not sure he would have joined if he knew before hand the state of the track.

Apparently used in the early days as a warning device for platelayers but sufficiently fearsome looking no doubt to use for personal protection.
