Silver Jubilee Livery?
I have read from two different sources (Yeadon Named Trains, and East Coast Pacifics), that the Silver Jubilee was repainted to match the Blue A4s circa 1938. I haven't found any photos that suggest a repaint though. Thoughts?
I know there was a spare Coronation set that did deputise for the Silver Jubilee occasionally (with name boards too).

Re: Silver Jubilee Livery?
Good morning all
This is very interesting as I still have a Kirk/Mailcoach Silver jubilee set to construct (it's been on the roundtuit shelf for over twenty years).
I think the blue livery looks so much better behind a blue A4 than silver livery.

The original finish on the SJ was not found to be happy with the travel grime, washing etc and the set was repainted in a matching 'silver' grey at about the same time as the extra coach was added. The actual shade was the same as the light grey used on the grey locos. The set was not repainted in blue at any stage; I have photos of it in storage during WW2 and it is quite clearly in light grey.

Re: Silver Jubilee Livery?
Did the coaches go back into service post-war still in silver or were they repainted then? I have a vague recollection of a picture of one set in silver in a mixed rake, but I can't place where I saw it.

So out of interest how would the repaint compare to the old? Photographs looks similar.

G'day all
I looked in Michaels Harris's book and found mention of the repaint in silver/grey, but no mention of blue.
It did mention that the bogies were of the heavyweight variety.

Just picked a new book up, 'Streamlined Steam'....very interesting, but if I'm honest, I'm finding it hard to tell the difference in the silver livery in 1938/39 from that in 1935.

Ay up!
The colour difference was slight. Basically the coaches were painted the same colour as the locos and the original Rexine covering was chosen to be as close a match as possible.
The bright stainless steel beading remained as before.

Re: Silver Jubilee Livery?
The spare set was basically an additional set of Coronation stock minus observation carriage and without branding for a particular train. This was used on the Silver Jubilee whilst the regular set was out of service for the addition of an extra carriage and repainting. The spare set may also have deputised at other times. It carried roofboards whereas the regular Coronation and West Riding sets did not, so it can usually be identified in photos.
The streamlined stock was given an overhaul before re-entering service in 1948 and retained its pre-war liveries initially as the new BR colours had not been determined. What few photos there are show that individual train branding was removed.

Out of interest, would you know the dates that the regular set was in works?
Many Thanks

Re: Silver Jubilee Livery?
I realise why I thought they were painted blue, below is the quote from Yeadon 'named trains'.
'From 1937 blue became standard colour for the streamlined trains and during 1938 the set of silver grey coaches were repainted to suit.'

The additional carriage was inserted into the set early in 1938. Railway Observer reported its first run as being on 17 March 1938.

G'Day Gents
These SJ and Coronation coaches could be a very interesting subject in there own right, from inception to withdrawal.
Out of interest, where were they stored during WW2. As big long sheds, would have made tempting targets !!!

Wasn't one of the blue sets used as a command train by General Eisenhower?

I believe the West Riding set, was stored at Copley Hill Carriage Sheds.
