Hat & Gloves, a supply of food & drink, a de-icer, rock salt,

Re: Icy Conditions
One of the Top Gear episodes had a demonstration of how much space all this took up, it filled an estate car and then some.
BTW, I think you forgot a fully charged mobile phone (especially in areas without reception), some old carpet to put under the wheels and the kitchen sink (for dropping on the toes of H&S officials).
I hope the guard didn't charge you commercial freight rates...

Re: Icy Conditions
That doesn't surprise me. When was the last time you saw a council make any decisions (except to up their allowances)? They just refer everything to endless committees and sub-committees.Boris wrote:Re Elf and Safety

Some people not far from me have been trying to get a zebra crossing across a busy road. After 5 years of deliberating this and that, traffic censuses, working parties, etc the council agreed to build a 3 foot long 'island' in the middle of the road with a 'keep left' bollard on it.
Apparently, that makes it easier to cross because people only have to go half way at a time.

Re: Icy Conditions
Good afternoon.
This is fun. I'm not sure this is strictly "LNER News" but what the ...
My area of work is regarded as a "hazardous activity" and so I get to see all this stuff close up. Although there are no specific H&S Laws governing the wearing of safety glasses when playing conkers etc, there is a catch-all called "Duty of Care." Basically if you're in charge, then you're responsible for reducing the risk of any activity to be "as low as reasonably practicable." This, combined with "no win no fee" lawyers results in normally straightforward jobsworths turning into the kind of zealots who'se decisions regularly feature in the tabloid press.
Try turning up as an exhibitor at one of the model shows at a major public exhibition centre and you will be presented with a Risk Assessment form to fill in, even if you are not qualified to complete one. The answer was that there was a risk to the public of electrocution (mains electrics) burning (soldering irons) poisoning (flux, oils etc) toxic substances (MEK, acid flux) choking (swallowing locomotive models) and asphyxiation (putting head in plastic bag). However, all hazards were reduced to "as low as reasonably practicable" if the public remained on their side of the crowd barriers. What a farce!
Regards,
Vernon

It might be a farce to you and me Vernon but it is deadly serious and extremely lucrative to some of these "conmedians"notascoobie wrote:Good afternoon.

Re: Icy Conditions
True, my risk assessment included paper cuts from handling drawings and the risk of the table collapsing onto visitors. For that I'm suppposed to have 3rd party liability of upto 1 million GBP. hmmm.notascoobie wrote: Try turning up as an exhibitor at one of the model shows at a major public exhibition centre and you will be presented with a Risk Assessment form to fill in

Re: Icy Conditions
I'd say 99% of what is on that website is sod all to do with the ACTUAL 'health and safety' people but more to do with much more low level organisations who live in fear of the ambulance chasers. I don't know why that website calls itself health and safety when it's actually to do with RAIB... not HSE. As much as people say in response to, in their eyes over zealous, safety precautions, responding with 'it's just common sense', safeguards are in place for when people don't use common sense, as is often the case - plenty of deaths and serious injuries that will affect people's working lives when people don't listen to safety rules and don't actually use 'common sense'

As I am not a fully paid up member of the elf&safety circus,,, I will openly admit it amuses me no end.
And hopefully,,, some of the underlying messages related to pragmatic common sense may even stick.
