Tyneside Electrics

I'll be giving a presentation to the Newcastle upon Tyne branch of the Railway Correspondance and Travel Society on Thursday, February 14, 2013. Full details of time and location will be available on the RCTS website.

TITLE:
The Origins and Development of the NER Tyneside Electrification
Part 1 1890-1914

SYNO[SIS:
Tyneside railways in the 1890’s and traffic problems at Newcastle Central.
The growth of electrical applications in this era.
Charles Merz and NESCO.
Trams, turbines, and trains.
Carville Power Station.
The NER electrification.
Installation and commissioning of the electrical supply infrastructure.
Design and construction of the rolling stock.
Service operations and development.
Accidents and mishaps.

Groan!! Yes I know, I know. I'm running out of excuses at this stage! Age, failing eyesight, my family, are all putting the bite on me.

The biggest problem with original research is that just when you think you have enough material to make a start, another source opens up. I agree that a point must be reached where you have to call a halt on that part of the project and commence the writing part. There's certainly no obstacle to to the writing element - I was an IT technical writer for 25 years. So yes, at some point there will be a publication.
