I am looking for information about a railway lamp to be used in local history education. It has a round handle on the top, and a reverse-U shaped handle on the rear. On the side it is marked 'LNER Loco' and on the other side there is a plaque marked 'C. Goodrum Darnall Loco'. On the inside it has an oil burner and there are 2 lenses (one clear, one red) that can be rotated.
Can anyone help me to date this lamp?
Further information on the use of the lamp and possibly who 'C Goodrum' may have been would be gratefully received!
Thanks, Nat

Without seeing a photo, it is difficult to give much information, but these lamps cover a long period from Grouping until the end of steam and some time after.
From your description it is similar to the guard's hand lamp, but some dated from the 1890s and were recycled with ownership plates soldered on the body. Thus this may not be an LNER lamp but a much earlier version.
They tend to be abit like the broom handle which has had ten heads - I have a GN lamp from Hitchin, which has an LNER plate on it and it has been repaired several times, mainly at the tin shop at Doncaster.

Sorry can't help on this one but there was a driver Goodrum at Darnall in my days but drivers didn't have their own set of lamps ever.
Wonder if it was some sort of retirment, or something he took when he left.
Any chance of a picture?
Boris
