Ferme Pk area S/boxes.

Post by lead_plug »

Many thanks to Micky and all for the trip down memory lane, an area that I left behind in 1951. I had forgotten the Sth Down box, probably because I mostly passed by on chimney south loco's, putting me on the wrong side.
i would mention that the Sth Up box was the Gateway to Hornsey Loco. There was a bell-push mounted on a post by the exit signal which enabled us to indicate to the signalman our destination - Up side, 1 ring - Down side 2 rings - South of Harringay 3 rings.
The back door to the loco was the single line starting by the foreman's office and which was controlled by the Hornsey sidings box (I believe it was Hornsey Up Goods.
There was sometimes bother about this because incoming engines were required to ring in to the box to advise that they were inside the depot, and sometimes this was forgotten!
Sometimes when the shed was choked up, loco's might be abandoned by their crews while still on the engine line, resulting in a flurry of activity in the foreman's bunk followed by the dreaded cry "Foul of Hornsey" which got some action, if there were any men available.

Harringay Up Goods had a little-known link with the present day preservation scene.
Back in GNR days one of the signalmen had a son who was keen on railways but on his father's advice he sought employment elsewhere.
Many years later the son became the first individual to purchase a loco from BR with restoration and preservation in mind, the subject being a humble J 52, 8846, which is better known as GNR 1247.
Further down the track his work with various preserved lines resulted in a loco or power car being named after him, "Capt W.G.(Bill) Smith", something his father would never have dreamed of.
