I am modelling Greenfield Station on the LNWR Standedge line. In the 1950's the 09.00 Liverpool-Newcastle train was always Eastern Region stock, as were a number of other trains on the Standedge route. Under BR, Standedge Tunnel eastwards from Diggle to Huddersfield was transferred to the Eastern Region.
I would be most grateful if anyone can assist here......Were the Liverpool-Newcastle trains sharing carraige stock in LMS days or did LNER stock only appear after 1948?

Re: LNER stock on Standedge expresses
This was originally a joint NER/L&Y train which ran into Liverpool Exchange. Both companies built new dining car sets for this route. By 1928 the LMS had changed the Liverpool terminus to Lime St and presumably were using the LNWR route over the Pennines.coachmann wrote:I would be most grateful if anyone can assist here......Were the Liverpool-Newcastle trains sharing carraige stock in LMS days or did LNER stock only appear after 1948?
In 1928 one LNE and two LMS sets were used for this service with departures from Newcastle at 4:19 am and 10 am and Liverpool at 8:35 am and 2:15 pm
The LNE set was BTK(3), FO, 3xTK, BTK(3) and had pullman gangways so was presumably new group standard stock. The LMS sets were similar except a FK was used instead of the FO.
The LNE set worked the 10am Newcastle departure MThO, the Liverpool 8.35am and the Newcastle 4.19am departures WSO and the Liverpool 2.15pm departure TFO.
Hope this helps.

Re: LNER stock on Standedge expresses
Hi Bill,
Thanks for this. If LNE stock showed up intrain in LMS days then this answers my question.
The LYR did indeed use Liverpool Exchange and Manchester Victoria, but the LNWR used Liverpool Lime Street and Manchester Exchange. Both trains took the same route out of Manchester with 'LYR' trains carrying on through Newton Heath and Summit Tunnel (Calder Valley) route whilst 'LNWR' trains turned right at Miles Platting and ran via Stalybridge and Diggle Tunnel (Standedge route).
Looking at photos taken in later LMS and BR days on Miles Platting Bank, it is sometimes difficult to identify which train is which considering both ex LYR and ex LNW trains were working to Newcastle or York but along different routes.

The 1928 LNER diagram book also gives stock for Lime St-Hull and Lime St-Scarborough trainscoachmann wrote:Hi Bill,

I can't find any reference in the 1928 book to Liverpool Exchange.Looking at photos taken in later LMS and BR days on Miles Platting Bank, it is sometimes difficult to identify which train is which considering both ex LYR and ex LNW trains were working to Newcastle or York but along different routes.

Right. It is possible the ex-LYR Trans-Pennine services were cut back to commence from Manchester Victoria (with connections coming in from Liverpool Exchange).I can't find any reference in the 1928 book to Liverpool Exchange.
