Mystery ex-LNER Coach
I've been sorting through the various 35mm slides I took years ago and came across this, which shows what looks to be an ex-LNER coach of some description in departmental use (as a "Degreasing Van", so I presume it contains tanks of unpleasant solvents) at Bounds Green in February 1985. It looks like it's numbered 040877 and carries a warning that it's out of gauge. Does anyone know what it was originally (I don't)?
So - did anyone dare tell Stephenson, "It's not Rocket science"?

Re: Mystery ex-LNER Coach
It looks older than LNER to me - pre-grouping, GNR or ECJS perhaps?
A topper is proper if the train's a non-stopper!

It's a North Eastern Railway dineing car. It was used for cleaning grills and ovens from restaurant cars at Bounds Green. Now at the Great central.

Thanks to one and all for the answers. I must pay a trip to the GCR one of these days.

Re: Mystery ex-LNER Coach
It might be a North Eastern Railway Coach - possibly Dia 155 Open Third, first built in 1908. I think that a number were converted by the LNER to Buffet Cars , in the early 1930s.
Re: Mystery ex-LNER Coach
The link to the VCT site I posted earlier says it was built in 1922 to Dia 204.

A mystery solved.
I have been asking around if anyone knew about a Degreasing van normally stabled on the Up Side between Peterborough and London.
I used to see it frequently in passing during the mid - late 80s
