Thanks, Spamcan - some interesting stuff on here, particularly like the scenes of shunting those wagons containing crated Vauxhall Cars at Oakleigh Park. The traffic would have originated out of Vauxhall's private sidings just east of Bute St. in Luton and been worked over the branch to Hatfield. Oakleigh Park was, I seem to recall, a sort of staging point before the wagons were hauled to the London Docks, Vauxhall having a big export market in those days. How different from today...

Just enjoyed the last link, its surprising that only one loco Minoru was super clean but then again it was on a prestige train. The rest of the locos were either work stained but clean or downright filthy just how i remember them. Towards the end of the clip the two diesels were sparkling. The clip is well worth watching just to see 60700 in action.

They were probably luggage vans at the head of boat trains - either from one of the cross Channel ports or Southampton.

Solario is correct.
From what i have read in books and magazines. The parcel vans were indeed for customers luggage travelling to and from the various Southern ports.

The front cover of Decembers Steam Days magazine has picture of a Bulleid "Merchant Navy" class with what looks like a parcel van next to the engine. Also their is a colour spread about boat trains in the magazine showing it also.

Finally i have enjoyed reading about the article about the "The White Rose". excellent stuff.

What a super pair of films-really enjoyed them,even the emu's of which i've never been a fan!Nice to hear Radio Caroline too.I think Blur got it right with their album title"MODERN LIFE IS RUBBISH".It's not just television that's suffering from a lack of variety!Did i see snippets of the original class 70s too?Freightliner chiefs should have done their research and named their godawful new engines class 68.Or better still,rejected them out of hand!Give me a 47 over a 66,67or70(?)anyday.Must say kingsx looked great.Deltic central!!
