It's nice and straightforward. First, make sure the file size of each photo is no more than 500KB (reduce in paintshop pro or similar). Then, scroll down a bit to where it says "upload attachment", under that is "browse", select one file/picture and add this. I then scroll back up to the row of buttons under the subject heading, click on "Img" and then click "place inline"
[img] tap some words in and press submit...
Just have a go! A nice thing about this forum is that you can edit your posts, so if you make a mess of it, you can sweep away any evidence...unless someone else comments on it in the meantime... (One edit here for a typo. It's right now Richard...)
(BTW, this one is one of Embsay's vintage train in Hambleton - Peckett 'Annie' and two of Stephen Middleton's GER coaches)

That is 500KB rather than 500MB!
Images are hosted on my main web account, so I must maintain some fairly tight restrictions on image size and individual usage.
Images on the static pages are hosted on Amazon's CDN system. It would be nice if a future version of the forum software supported this, as it would let me relax the limits a bit.

Try downloading Picasa, which is free
http://picasa.google.com/
You can then reduce the size of anything you have so that it can be posted on here and things like facebook, all of which have size limits, if you wish. When you get it installed, right click on the picture you have chosen, then chose the option 'edit picture in Picasa' then chose 'export picture to file' and use the 'resize' option, reducing it to about 1200 pixels, then choose where you are going to keep your file.
Give it a try FF, I did and managed to get used to it, even though I'm a bit of a duffer at such things. Good luck

A topper is proper if the train's a non-stopper!

FF if I can do it you can do it.
Just try and keep the file size down, as stated earlier.
