1929-Minuites: "Gresley recomends"+clue

Post by Jingling Geordie »

This is the only entry that I have found where Gresley's name appears.

(The beneficiary) "is largely attended by the plant workmen at Doncaster, and Mr.Gresley recomends a continuance of the company grant of £260.

Resolved that, having regard to to the practice of the late Great Northern Railway, the contribution of £260 per annum be continued during the Company's pleasure."

Part 1 Who was the beneficiary?
Part 2 How did a Railway Company come to provide support of this nature?
Did any other part of the LNER have similar arrangements?

Like the LNER ,the beneficiary tried to run a regular service. Like Gresley, they on the odd occasion may well have rung the changes.

Spot on. The minutes also say that, "The Bishop of Sheffield asks whether the Company will contimue their present contribution of £260"

"Part 2 How did a Railway Company come to provide support of this nature?
Did any other part of the LNER have similar arrangements?
