Same mentality as some of the idiots over here. I used to watch them get stuck on Red Cow crossing at Exeter St Davids. It also happens in Switzerland. I saw somebody get a glancing blow from the Glacier Express when it was crawling into Chur a couple of weeks ago. Fortunately they wern't badly hurt. Don't know how they couldn't see a red loco coming in............

Happens a lot in the US as well, and we have more "grade crossings" than the UK. You'd think people would know, but they think they can beat the train or something like that. A year or two ago someone stopped on the crossing to watch the Amtrak train with his son!

Houston has a Metro light rail system that opened a few years ago. The cars have their own onboard cameras. Poor design (street level running in a reserved lane) and poorly educated drivers results in one of the highest accident rates in the US:

Crossing jumping was a big problem for me during my working days, was forever out with the inspectorate at the Tile Sheds and Boldon Lane Metro / Railway crossings.
The idiots would weave around the half barriers when down or race to beat the dropping barriers and when caught by the cameras would claim the warning lights / signs were not working etc etc so they had to be checked over, of course we never found anything wrong with them.

Sadly, the Lockington tragedy of 1986 springs to mind. There were 9 very unlucky people on that day.

I was working there the other year and a local came up and during the chat he mentioned the crash. Pointing to the hedge alongside he said "Thats were the train went through" so still evident after all this time.

Plenty of "at grade" crossings here in Canada, too. Most, but certainly not all, of those in rural areas have a couple of flashing red lights, but not necessarily any barriers. Trains, mainly freight, are fairly slow, hauled by double or triple headers (sometimes more), have three blindingly bright headlamps, very loud horns, and there's still way too many collisions at level crossings. Go figure.
