A4 60027 Merlin's Boiler question

Post by neildimmer »

Hi all

I have added a photo taken by Tony Gillett at Preston in July 1966 of the boiler from A4 60027 Merlin in the consist of a freight service, does anyone have any idea what this was about, something to do with 60007 Sir Nigel Gresley's overhaul at Crewe in 1966 perhaps?

Also added is a B/W night photo of 60004 William Whitelaw taken at Carlisle Station on the 25th September 1961 at 21:15 pm

Are there any other details regarding this boiler movement and how it was identified as having been carried by 60027? According to Yeadon 60027 was condemned 3/9/65 and cut up 12/65 by Geo Campbell, scrap merchants of Shieldhall Glasgow. I have not previously seen any mention that 60007 underwent a boiler change during its time at Crewe Works 1966/67.
A4 60026 W/D 12/65 was taken to Crewe 9/66, its sale for scrapping in Scotland 2/66 having been cancelled. It was used mainly as a donor of driving wheels to 60007, the latter's driving wheels having cracks in places. The remains of '26' were then scrapped by Hughes Bolckow, Blyth, Northumberland, the date given as 9/67. Anyway, it would be fascinating to get to the bottom of this story.

I was involved in SNG's first overhaul in preservation at Carnforth and I do recall that much of the motion and a lot of other components were (and probably still are) stamped '60026'. I've asked the question and feeling seems to be that the boiler was not changed. I've also seen a picture of 60026 at Crewe, allegedly after component removal and ready for scrap, with both boiler and cladding in place. Presumably they might have dropped the boiler back on the frames for transport to disposal but they'd surely never have put the cladding back on?

The people to ask are the A4LS - is anyone here a member? If not I'll ask the ones I know next time I bump into one.

Over the years I have touched upon the topic contained in this thread, several times, but never really found any resolution.

Does anyone have any information that could provide a solution to this conundrum ?

I think this could well be 60041 Salmon Trout’s boiler removed by Cowlairs Works after withdrawal. And purchased by Alan Pegler for a spare for 4472. Possibly photographed in transit from Glasgow to Carnforth. What say others?

Wouldn't have been Salmon Trout. As she was sent light engine in steam to [Darlington] North Road Works, where she was stripped of assorted parts, the main one being the boiler for use as a spare as you mention by Alan Pegler. With the combined remains being scrapped on site. As a side note as 4472 was having the last set of B.R. tyres fitted Mr. Pegler approached them asking about the old scrap tyres, as he'd had an idea to cut them down into small sections to sell on as paper weight, souvenirs, etc of the loco and helping to spread the cost of the overhaul. Unfortunately he was too late as they'd already been melted down/scrapped :( .

I did not realise that the link to the photograph, as mentioned in the very first post on this topic, is no longer functional.
Please find, below a link to the same photograph, now residing on Smugmug.
