Great Central Breakdown Cranes

Post by GWRSwindon »

Are there any books or data available on GCR cranes? It's one of the few aspects of the company I can find very little on.

hello
RAILWAY BREAKDOWN CRANES by Peter Tatlow ISBN978-1-906419-69-1 (www.noodlebooks.co.uk) has some information and photos on Steam breakdown cranes operated by the GCR including a photo of the MS & L 15 ton Cowans Sheldon crane.
The Signalling Record Society published a copy of the 1914 appendix to the GCR Working Timetable which details the locations and type/capacity of steam and hand operated cranes in a section titled Break-down vans. Crane lifting capacity ranged between 10, 15 and 20 tons. This book also has a list of all GC signal boxes in 1914 and may still be available.
best regards
Dave
