Seeing an N2 takes me back to Christmas 1955 and my first Hornby Dublo train set containing an N2, a brown closed van, a grey mineral wagon, a Royal Daylight tanker and a guards van plus track. For a boy of 7, that was a magical Christmas. I still have it.

Hi Kestrel,
I also got my first Hornby-Dublo train set in the mid-fifties, mine was two coaches and the Maroon Duchess of Atholl.
Happy Days

My second was an A4, Silver King. Do you remember in those days, you had to buy the tender separately. Some time later, my father came home with a Duchess of Atholl in LMS maroon wrapped up in brown paper that someone in work had given him. It wasn't working but he got it going again.
We lived in Liverpool then and he worked by Binns Road. Once my N2 gave up the ghost so he dropped into Meccano on his way into work on a Saturday morning and picked it up at lunchtime, all repaired. It still goes now, some 60 years later. You wouldn't get that service now.
