number of trains to Edinburgh

Post by Kestrel »

Here's a question for the experts.

A friend of mine has just travelled from Chester to Edinburgh and said they had to use six trains.

Would they have had to use six in the 'good old days'. I said not. Something like Chester to York and then pick up the King's Cross to Edinburgh train.

Is there anyone who can give the answer?

Thank you

I think in steam days the journey would be Chester to Manchester and then catch a Liverpool to Newcastle express and change at Newcastle for Edinboro.

The expresses from Liverpool were usually double-headed to Leeds city to get them over the Pennines. Once at Leeds the LMS locos were replaced by an LNER pacific-usually an A3 from Neville Hill or Gateshead sheds if memory serves me right.

Chester to Crewe or Warrington, then direct to Edinburgh, according to the current timetables. Journey time less than 4 hours.

I can't see how it could possibly need 6 trains!

I agree 2 changes Chester to Dunblane with a two hourly service via Edinburgh and another via Glasgow. You can get to practically the whole country in two change from Dunblane - it is quite surprising. 6 changes sounds like Sunday engineering and/or cheap tickets
