Names - Class 91

I've been looking around (unsuccessfully) for the names that the Class 91 locomotives used to carry when they were in the livery of the GNER; I used to live next to the ECML near Bensham so I saw them on a regular basis. The names were painted on in the same shade of yellow as the GNER logo. Names I remember are 'City of Newcastle;' 'City of Aberdeen;' 'City of York.' One of the driving trailers carried the name 'Duke of Edinburgh.' All the names disappeared when the GNER lost its franchise to National Express

Nice to see a 91 carrying the same name as a NBR single but the single only got the Short form Berwick will post the pic when I find it. found the pic BERWICK and Glasgow were the NBRs last single wheelers I think.

The LBSCR was especially keen on naming its locos after places on its system. The practice is alleged to have caused confusion among some passengers, who thought they were destination boards. I hope no-one was too put out when their train didn't call at Berwick, whether in GNER or NBR days.

The NBR also named its locos after places on its system and sometimes changed the names when the locos were reallocated to different areas. NBR used painted names rather than plates. I cant remember which CME ordered the names to be removed.
One NBR practice slightly modified was adopted by the LNER. The NBR used destination boards on the top lamp bracket and when the Flying Scotsman started running non stop someone at Haymarket painted a board FLYING SCOTSMAN in the NBR style and placed it where destination boards were once fixed.
