Seacoaler

My recollection was that Whesoes was out on the Bishop Auckland branch, to the north of North Road Station I think. By the time I got to Darlington they were doing very little raiol, but Darlington & Simpson Rolling Mills still had 3 private sidings and took loads of steel.

Hope that gives you a start. oldmaps might help

Thanks Cambois ,North of North road is Whesssoe road , so looks like its somewhere along Whessoe road , I think the two locos in pic may be Darlington and Simpsons shunters.

I mentioned this question to a friend of mine familiar with the area his response is:-

The photographer is on the roof of the Whessoe work looking north. North Road railway works are the buildings at the top of the picture, now the site of a Morrison’s supermarket. Whessoe Road runs between the houses and the railway lines. Hope Town Cut runs under the lines. The line to the left goes to Barnard Castle and Bishop Auckland, North Road station is just out of shot on the right. I think the shutter is the Whessoes. The row of houses in the middle distant is still standing but now converted in shops etc. The houses to the far left were demolished some years ago. A B & Q store is on the site of the sidings top right. Hope this helps.

The farm crossing and sidings at Tofts, between Marske and Saltburn, today the box and sidings have gone, the crossing is still used by the farm and local riding school.

Is that an actual book about the lines or rather an A4 repro of the "Line Diagrams"?

Evening All

line diagrams or no, I shall be investing in a copy, especially with the steel works branches and all that mix of LNER & Private Owners on offer - Dorman Long, Bernard Samuelson, Cargo Fleet, Cochranes, Bolckow Vaughan & Slaggy Island all in one - I can hear Chris Rea playing Steel River even now!
