Thanks so much, Malcolm - passing Wood Gn No1 as well, a box very well known to me.Malcolm wrote:Here's one for hq1hitchin (sorry about the picture quality, the original looks better).

Re: Passing the Time
Wasn't quite happy with the A4 at Wood Green, so went back to the atmospheric style of picture.(Got a few ideas in the pipeline for more.)

Re: Passing the Time
Pretty Please Malcolm NBR loco in NER territory (youve got plenty of choice i favour a C15 tank between Tweedmouth and the Border crossing en route to Kelso, preferably at Norham. Second choice one of the named 4-4-0s showing the wonderful choices of name or the legendary Diver that was sent to England when they fished it out of the Tay).
By the way thanks for posting in the photograph section i was coming on here tonight to prod you back in that direction.

Hi interested in the area served by 52D. also researching colliery wagonways from same area.
Re: Passing the Time
Okay everyone. Acquired a set of cheap coloured pencils and decided to see what could be made with them on the principal that it is never the tools....it is the workman that makes the quality (same for cameras. I have seen professionals obtain fantastic results from cheap cameras). Due to the nature of the colours and the difficulties with blending and subtlety, it was inevitable that it should end up looking like one of the series of 'Locomotive Publishing' postcards from the early 20th Century. I still feel that black and white provides the best expression of atmosphere, but what do you all feel?
Many of you will recognise the scene as being from a photo by R. J. Purves of King Edward Bridge Junction.
Malcolm.

Re: Passing the Time
Last one for while I'm afraid.
I was never too happy with the last colour picture (too much sky, not enough atmosphere, and other points), but the experience was valuable and gave me the confidence to try a more ambitious scene (one which should please all NER fans).

Re: Passing the Time
For a minute until i enlarged the pic i thought you had drawn 2115 of several posts in this forum. Anyway nice subject, Nice location and finally nice picture. Its good to remember that the GWR did not monopolise pretty 4-6-0s with copper capped chimneys.
Was the capuchon(windjabber) on the chimney of this class made out of copper or was it a later fitting made out of steel i have seen a few pictures where the old windjabber was fairly corroded.

Re your question about the capuchon: all the pictures I have of the "S" class are, of course, black and white, and even though they are of good quality it is difficult to tell whether they are steel or copper. On some pictures they really look like they are made from steel. However, most of the colour postcards and paintings of North Eastern engines show copper capped chimneys (I do realize that this is no great guide either as many artists altered details when painting).
To tell the truth, I just went with the others and plumped for copper as it looks better. I would be interested to know if they did carry copper capped chimneys in their early career. I know they ended up with steel capped ones.

Re: Passing the Time
I have moved most of the images to the the "Classified" thread (Passing the time) in order to group them together.

Re: Passing the Time
Once again I have the time (now I'm settled in the land of sunshine) and the inclination to get back to producing pictures again, but I would welcome suggestions as to a worthwhile subject.
52D would like to see a North British loco on NER metals.
Autocar would like to see the NER Autocar inside York station.
Does anyone have any other suggestions? I can do the detailed stuff, but I much prefer doing an 'atmosheric' scene.

Race to the North?
Night scene at a large station - TPOs? Sleeping car passengers?
