Re: My models (some LNER)
Here's one for all you 'bodgers' - will the Hornby A1/A3 driving wheels fit on the axles for the Hornby B12? Had a look at our GC-liveried C4 at Ruddington on Sunday (been built with a white-metal chassis, Nu-Cast kit allegedly) and thought I might be able to use the remains left over from my 4-8-2's, but the motor is mounted too high. Also thinking of taking a look at our GC-liveried A5, and trying to get that running.

Evenin' all
Sorry to be a rivet counter, but I think the C4 white metal kit was by McGowan. They crop up sometimes on Ebay and fetch good money. They also made a B4, with which Atlantic 2879 has performed wonders to get a decent loco. I have a B4, but the castings are terrible, everytime I look at it, I put it back into the box.
However, Nucast did make an A5.
The A1/3 wheels should be good for a C4/5 as they are the correct size.

Start on a dynamometer car
Hi all,
Just a few pictures of the compensated bogie for the LNER dynamometer car as rereleased by D&S models. I think I may have already gone wrong with the sideframe castings, but without some serious drilling these did not appear to fit over the top-hat bearings for the wheelsets.

Re: My models (some LNER)
Having done some measuring of the castings against the etched brass framing, it would appear that I have got some new alignments to drill out for the bearings to sit in - castings are 8'6", framing is at 8'9" or thereabouts - no wonder it looked odd the way I'd done it.

Re: My models (some LNER)
Today has been eventful for all of the wrong reasons. Started with drilling out the castings on the compensated bogie and reattaching at 1am - not too bad. Came to put the same approach into practise for the other bogie, and found that the castings have needed to be tweaked individually per side rather than being the same. D'oh! Then I dropped the lot clearing the table for an early Christmas dinner. Am pleased to report, however, that the bogies are harder than my head.

Re: My models (some LNER)
Are you using waisted bearings ? I rarely use the normal type as they can be a real pain as above.
Re: My models (some LNER)
It is what they were designed for. Additional clearance can be created by countersinking the existing holes in the castings.mick b wrote:Are you using waisted bearings ? I rarely use the normal type as they can be a real pain as above.

Re: My models (some LNER)
I'm using the 'as supplied' bearings and wheelsets from 51L (14mm suitable for Big Four and BR). Bogies are now ready for priming with matt white/grey (standard Humbrol for me). I may be being thick, but does the coach body and chassis form two seperate sub-assemblies? In which case, why are the locating points for the bogie bolster nuts on the underside of the floor rather than the underframe?

Re: My models (some LNER)
All of the D&S Coaches I have built come as seperate underframes/floor and bodies. The two are held together with screws.

Re: My models (some LNER)
I appear to have hit a snag with my underframe - straight from the box and built as described I seem to have wound up needing at least 1.5mm of packing to go between the bolster and the underframe to give the bogies freedom to move and not short out through the wheel flanges and brass flooring. Has anyone else found a similar problem when constructing metal coaches?

Re: My models (some LNER)
I find that very hard to understand. I do generally stick black paper on the underside of a brass floor if the wheels can contact it at the extremes of their movement but Dan's are usually designed so the wheel scant' go anywhere near that far.
Can we see some pictures?

Re: My models (some LNER)
I'll have some for tomorrow. Unless in doing something daft like folding into the fold lines rather than away from them, I've managed to get the bogies touching the solebars and underside. Easy enough to sort out, having just checked the chassis so far, I've got the underframe sitting 2mm/6inch too low.

Re: My models (some LNER)
As requested by a few of the members here - pictures of the underframe/bogies. Upon remeasuring, it now appears that I only have 0.5mm to play with in terms of height adjustment.
