Well, Hornby have been puffing the damned thing for I forget how many months or years. I'm delighted that it seems to be a good'un. But frankly I lost interest about 9 months ago and returned my attention to relatively monstrous narrow-gauge locomotives. It HAS occurred to me that the works of a Hornby P2 combined with a re-work of the upperworks of my old K's job would perhaps have possibilities.
But, what the heck: they can plead with me for my custom; I ain't going cap-in-hand to their door. So go off and make a few surplus to already-booked demand, Hornby. And , just in case this post is seen as biased against a particular manufacturer, much the same could be said for the Bachmann Wainwright "C" in Southern black livery (although I grant there's no real mileage in trying to combine that with the upperworks of a K's P2).

Mine has (belatedly) just arrived! Its fine - only criticism might be the numbering and lettering which is not shaded but that can be put right. Test run and it romped away with eight bogies (maximum my station can cope with on my layout is nine!

It's proving very hard to wait for my super detailed version and not to treat myself to one of these, but with the CCTs about to arrive and the sense that other models are also imminent, I'm trying to be good!

Bought one from Rails this morning, should be here in about 2 weeks, I'll look good a Edgwares shunter
The fun part will be, to see if it will go around my curves, Woodcock 29, couldn't get any of his locos to go round it, expected with his U1 (it nearly made it)

After a bit of observation of my loco I have a question. Do others feel that the chimneys are set a little too high and that they even lean backwards slightly? Given the reported generous applications of factory glue to the joints in this model, I suspect I may resort to simply filing the plain rim of the chimney to get it just so rather than attempting to unseat and then reseat it.

Difficult to say Graeme - it may be a touch high but the fact that the smokebox sides slope down towards the front can create a sort of optical illusion!

I would agree that it is a touch high.
Interesting discovery when dismantling mine for review today - the Railroad model's tender is essentially the TTS sound type tender minus all the sound gubbins. And…when you take the bottom plate off, there are the tell tale signs of the tender actually having pickups designed into it.

Does anyone else think the boiler cladding doesn't taper in enough at the sides?
Not a deal breaker I know, but the taper isn't there at all compared to my isinglass drawing. I noticed this while I was tentatively offering up a Hornby A4 front with 1 eye on a future conversion

Is your drawing for the Bugatti nosed version?
If I was reading between the lines correctly someone did comment previously that the air smoothing on 2001 had the effect of also smoothing out the boiler taper.
If anyone has a drawing of both versions of P2 it would be interesting to compare this aspect since it would be another potential spanner for Hornby's alleged future production on the Bugatti nosed versions.
Looking at side-on photos of 2001 and later locomotives, 2001 does seem to lack the taper which is obvious on the others. (Though I'm talking about taper along the top rather than the sides to which you referred.)

I don't think Hornby can use ANY of the CotN moulding for the later P2s as they were different in many ways, including the cab which is moulded into the body on the current model.teaky wrote:Is your drawing for the Bugatti nosed version?

The streamlined P2s actually tapered in slightly less at sides than the original 2. They tapered to 6'4" at the front as opposed to 6'1".

You cannot compare the casing on 2001-2 with the later Bugatti nosed version - the casing on 2001-2 is flat along the top, also elliptical above the boiler centre line. On 2003-6 it has a distinct curved profile in elevation. That puts the kibosh on doing a straight Bugatti nose conversion from 2001.
