Hello Everyone,
This is a very timely thread for me as I have recently purchased a 7mm Ancorage kit for the K3. I am still researching and choosing a loco, 61962 is on my short list along with 61965. I have a lovely picture of 61962 at Hessle Haven and 61965 at Dairycoates. My main sticking point at the minute is the centre valve gear/crank webs etc. Can anyone help out with dimensions or drawings of the centre valve gear arrangement? Maybe even a drawing reference I can approach the NRM with ? The centre valve gear is not catered for in the kit and I would like to have it working. I must remember to put a short shovel on the footplate, I assume this helps in getting the back corners filled up nicely ?
In common with the rest of Gresley's three cylinder engines the middle valve was operated by his conjugated valve gear, a pair of levers (the 2 to 1 gear) that took the motion from the outside valves to operate the inside valve, so there was no conventional inside valve gear. NRM has lots of drawings for K3s. K16333 is the valve gear drawing for the AW engines which I is on the Darlington list Roll No 40. Search engine should find it for you.
There are several GAs and Pipe & rod drawings that are useful for modellers, Take a look at the NRM drawings lists for Darlington and Doncaster on the web.

Hi Eddie,
Thanks for the steer on the drawing number and I'll be sure to have a good look at the drawing lists before I visit. I have already sourced some castings for the conjugated valve gear from Laurie Griffin which I think originate from A3, so I'm hoping to modify those. The main thing I need the drawing for is the centre connecting rod and crank axle. This can be easily seen in 7mm so I would like to model it. Did the design of the centre connecting rod and crank axle differ between manufacturers ? I really need to pin down an exact loco before I go any further I think,
Eddie---1953 I was a coolie at Newport .
The big table was out at Newport so we used to have turns-turning engines and usually five coupled together would go Thby to Hartburn then back to Eaglescliffe then back to Bowesfield and off at Thornaby down the goods or mineral line back to Newport shed. The K3s we got on in those days had the piano stool; seats.
My favourite engine was 67281 equal with 67338, the worst 'cos it wouldn't even steam on shed cat was 65860 which was it's permanent turn. How they managed with it when it went it's ways to Percy Main
