Sawdust your post regarding the limited space around the bogie area seemed to answer the question regarding the vac pipes being on the outside of the underframes....but.

Good point Dave! lolDave wrote:Sawdust your post regarding the limited space around the bogie area seemed to answer the question regarding the vac pipes being on the outside of the underframes....but.
However Thompson bogies have their headstocks the other way up to Gresley bogies thus increasing the clearance. The reason why is to do with different dynamo mounting on the Thompson vehicles I think. Also it is the outer end which is tight.

Good point Sawdust.
Your original explanation still seems to stand for Gresley's.....it's so obvious especially when you see the space on the attached photo under a turnbuckle underframe, and when you take into account the amount of clear space left after you allow for the movement of the bogie, brake roding etc.

Re: Dia 113 Full Brake
I have a theory that the D113's were all straight irrespective of underframe type, and the D245's (being built later) were all dipped. At this stage I still have no idea why the LNER felt the need to change the design.
Only D245s survived into preservation, all of which have the dipped vacuum pipe.
Can anyone confirm or contradict that theory?

It's a good theory Mike

I am pretty sure that, from the photos I have, you are bang on Mike.
