I did settle on one that I like and I guess that's all that matters in the end. This will be a display model on my fireplace mantle and probably will never be seen by anyone who "knows" it's incorrect.

Thanks "Blink Bonny". I was coming to the conclusion nobody was interested in this kind of modelling. It is, after all, a display model and almost 24" long buffer to buffer.

I haven't done much work on it for a couple of months as I was getting a bit tired of 4472 and needed a change and have moved to another model.

I got bogged down with making decent decals for the tender and that's where she stands.

The wheels arestill needing a lot of detailing and are attached to a "subframe" so that I can attach all the metal bits. Still need to make the small bogie wheels too. Everything you see is hand made and I only have a Dremel and a 3-jaw chuck in a lathe as "power tools".

As an aside ... I used to see Blink Bonny as a lad growing up in Scotland!

We all must see colours differently as I have a Union Mills LNER green B12/3 and it looks too dark to my eye. I prefer the older Farish colour as applied to their A3 Scotsman but find the Bachmann N gauge V2 and A3 in LNER green is also quite good and both are much better than the U.M. B12'

I don't know if Union Mills have used different greens. Mine is too dark as well - more of an olive!

The colours on these images is very odd. I took the pictures out in my workshop under a desk lamp fitted with one of the new "spiral" bulbs rated for "daylight".

Here is a more realistic sample.

Not having been in the UK for 50+ years I have no idea what is correct ... which is why I opened this thread!

Hello Richard

Have you seenn the Union Mills photos that I posted on the J11 string. What do you think of the colours of the UM locos B12/3s & D20s?
They are as received colour wise. I feel that they have got the Darlington green just about right, Colin uses Precision paints by Phoenix Paints.

The first of your B12/3 pictures looks similar to mine, although the lighting makes it look better/lighter. I guess I have to put up with low lighting exhibition halls!

I've used Phoenix Precision paints for my Y7. I think their NER green is a bit dark (darker than your UM D20). I mixed a little yellow, but I think it needed more yellow. However, when you start to work out what shade of green they used 120+ years ago, it can be difficult!

re. light colours: these do make a difference. The railway room now has CFL daylights. I bought some of the round shaped ones by accident and ended up getting a matching set for the room as they are meant to be better for photography and colour matching. They appear bright but really they are just more bluish.
