My first attempt at kit building

Well, you picked a more dificult one than I did.

A Dapol (ex-Airfix) 4MT 2-6-0, running on a modified Tri-Ang 2MT chassis. seen here hauling a goods train on Wetherby, a former Shipley MRC layout now sold.

Living in the US, "Wetherby" is one I haven't seen, but it is definitely recognisable - with the Magnesium Limestone cutting, and the platform mounted 'junction' signal.

Incidentally I took all these pictures - they're not wonderful as they were taken on a cheapo point and shoot but if you want copies of them, let me know.

After a fair few months out of modelling I did a bit of work on it today and have now nearly completed the underframe all that needs doing is sticking the detailing on. I will post a few pictures tomorrow.

Heres my underframe, like I said its only the folded down castings and the solebar at the moment when I get my new toy delivered i will hopefully be able to progress further.

I recently started my first brass kit which is not of LNER persuasion (I bought the last couple of 4mm kits from Jim McGeown of Connoisseur models for something to practice on) My good lady bought me a Comet BG and the restaurant triplet set which I didn't want to risk as a first attempt. I have been using Carrs red label flux and 145 solder quite successfully with a silverline variable temperature iron bought off ebay for £14.95
I have nearly completed the toad brake van and have surprised myself how easily I have managed to solder quite neatly in most cases.

you'll be amazed, and if like me- overjoyed, when you see how quickly all the soldering comes together now. Two worst things in 4mm coaches I found was 1) consistent tumblehome and 2) neat solebar folds. After doing both of those you're away!!

look forward to seeing her as a rolling shell.

I definitely agree with your second point, getting a neat looking solebar is near impossible and as for the tumblehome, I haven’t attempted that yet, that’s why I didn't get a Gresley :lol:

The best thing for forming these is the bar on the front of a Rayburn..........

Hi
Use a workmate or similar , a 1/2 inch brass tube and a 12" steel ruler . Place etch and tube in workmate lineup with the top of the tumblehome place ruler in the vice in front against etch front and gently curve away from yourself, keep testing against the coach end until you get a good match. Dont worry about any slight gap as you can pull that in when soldering
