When i was a youngster back in the early 1960s i had all metal constructed steam loco/car that a youngster could sit in and was propelled by peddle power!!. The interesting thing about this loco/car was it was painted in a black livery with the front end, chimney, smokebox, steam dome & side tanks that was modelled on a ex-L.N.E.R. Thompson L1 with a B.R. running number on the smokebox door.

Yeah it is a pity BB i remember thinking at the time 1962-63 this thing looks like one of those steam engines (a Thompson L1) not that i knew it as such cos i was only about 5 or 6 years old at the time!!.Blink Bonny wrote:Interesting, Micky.

Sorry BB and other's i just remembered i couldn't get 'into' this toy steam engine to drive it you actually sat on the roof of the cab but it really did look like a L1 and it even had a coal bunker as well the whole toy made in metal and painted black they don't make kids toys like that anymore.

Mum and the offspring away for 8 days on Minorca, and I have peace.....and space to get the stock out. Left to right: Std J72 body with a weathered (and working) chassis, 2 x Ellison rectangular tank wagons, an old Dapol asphalt wagon, Dapol creosote tank, a smashing Hornby refrigerated NE box van (containing nitro-glycerine !), gunpowder van. And a 20T NE brake van.
All picked up for next to nowt via various means on eBay, or the rummage bins at model railway shows.
(RTR is soulless isn't it. )

Far from it. Thanks to the manufacturers "filling in the gaps" so to speak, my collection has more RTR than handbuilt these days.
The quality of some of the offerings is astounding. But others......

"Running sessions" have been scarce recently, and I seriously need something a little more permanent.
(Even if it's going to be a limited space creation.)

I have a LOT of .5mm holes to drill in some coach sides. These are brass overlays (247 developments) on moulded clear plastic sides (Southern Pride).
My problem is this - I keep snapping drill bits at an excessive rate. I am using a pin vice with only a couple of mm of bit protuding from the jaws with very little pressure but still - snap! And it's getting pricey! My Wallet is growling. Again.
So anybody any advice?

I have no engineering training, so treat my reply with care.
You are using the technique shown to me by the instrument workshop at my old firm, where there were several workers building live steam models.
I find that sometimes small drill bits jam just before they break through. If this happens I use a very fine broach to slightly clear the hole and then resume drilling.

The chances are that the drills you are using are low quality (allegedly HSS) Chinese made and are really no good for this type of work. Not really much good for anything. Good quality drills of the appropriate geometry are worth their price and I buy mine from Drill Services in Horley.

If you speak to them they will be able to give you the best advice but I suspect you need a quality drill with the correct geometry that so it will not grab and jam.
Slow spiral drill for brass
I would also consider cutting at higher rotational speed by using a mini drill press or an Archimedes drill chuck
