60007 Why did it stop

Post by Dave »

Returning to KingsX just now it stopped at Copmanthorpe for several minutes at the crossing, blowing off. Then restarted and continued on it's way. A great show to watch....and the noise.
Does anybody know why ?.

I believe (O Level Chemistry, 1982) that it shows that steam locomotive exhaust contains Sulphuric Acid.

I always thought sulphuric acid was H2OSO4

Apologise if my sense of humour took this thread off topic. But sulphur dioxide (SO2) + water (H2O) = sulphurous acid (H2SO3). More water and the appropriate heat, would create Sulphuric acid (H2SO4) + Hydrogen (H2)

Hence Network Rail don't allow steam engines to stop under OLE, connections, neutral sections, etc., except under exceptional circumstances.

Silly question - any signals about? Or perhaps they were advised over their radio to slow down, due to a train in the section ahead?

Any number of reasons, but it's unusual to get a full stop in a section without a signal and a restart, I'd have thought?

Yes there is a signal a bit further on but it was green all the time. I'm told it only goes to green when the route is set at Colton junction before the train leaves York, but I will double check this. No train was in section before it as the section ends just out of view.

Maybe the driver was topping his railway issue watch battery up with the sulphuric acid ?
