Is there anything in the Gresley Observer on this topic?
Not a lot of help, apologies Tom.

RCTS 2A has been the best source, but only mentions red backs on the special A4s (Original 4, Coronation and West Riding locos). But I've found 1938 colour footage of Kingfisher from 1938 with red backed plates.
Don't forget that Tom's at the Ormesby Hall Show, Middlesbrough, tomorrow and Sunday, with his weathering demonstration. Extra chairs are being organised for in front of his display. No pressure there, then, Tom!
Herring Gull
Although I've shown photographs of her before, after looking at photographs, I've altered the nameplate to red backed.
Gadwall
Due to the weather, these are the first outdoor photographs of her. Both locos are in Summer 1938 condition, so both are depicted as less than a year old.

A slight drift from topic, but looking at various photos, I'm stumped as to when exactly the drain cock arrangement changed from four outer and two center to six outer. I've modified those supplied by Hornby on my 2509 and 4489, with the latter being in circa 2014 / early 1938 condition. I haven't joined up the cuts simply due to the need to run on 2nd radius curves / turnouts;

Yes, I've been aware about this for some time....but to be honest, if a drain cock arrangement is the only fault someone can find with my locos....life's not too bad!
Seen as my pacifics will be doing a scale speed of 65-75mph....it wont be noticeable.

To be correct they would also have to stretch and be fixed to the front guard irons . havent checked dates the A4 had three drains I believe in BR times? when they were cut back at the same time as the outer guards were removed.
Of interest then, on page 4 of the Great Gathering thread there's a photo of Mallard and Dominion of Canada side by side with Mallard having three pipes and D of C having two pipes, as in 60800's photo. viewtopic.php?f=2&t=8899&hilit=Gathering&start=45
Very enjoyable day once again playing trains on Little Bytham. Tony has kindly helped me re gauge a mass of wagons bought from RMweb member 'Scottiedog' from EM to OO (some may say that is sacrilege!)
I brought a couple of my recently weathered LNER Pacifics (destined for my future layout of Thirsk). For some reason Gadwall didn't wish to run with it's tender (creating a short) but ran fine loco only. One wonders if this A4 knew its future fate in 1942, and felt it best to not move at all! Tony did the kindest thing he could for the old bird and cut the connection to the tender pick ups. As Tony said, this is a bit like trying to cure gout by cutting one's leg off..... however it did cure the problem!
I asked Tony if he could pose the locos in the positions below, and I'm really pleased with the results. Thanks Tony!

Looking very nice. Perfect combination of modelled location, period and stock. I see that you have been amassing teak stock.
Did Gadwall run at home? Is it all "one loco" or is it from a mixture of sources? Just wondering if you've ended up with opposite polarity loco and tender underframes.......

Gadwall had only been tested previously with a battery on the wheels when cleaning...as it's a recent one it hadn't run at Grantham before hand.
It is indeed a mixture of sources.... Kingfisher from trainpack with a Mallard Non Corridor Tender. It baffled all of us, as the loco was happy running on it's own, but shorted whenever any tender was attached to it.
