I see you have got yourself a pot of Phoenix Precision Paints Crimson for A4 wheels!

I did my Bittern today.

Here is my A4 given my treatment which by a case of serendipity, lightens the GB to something closer to what I think is right.

What version is the Loco chassis ?

Actually Tom, it's Humbrol no.20. I tried Precision and didn't like the shade so tried this colour. Seems to paint well and it looks the part I take it, from your response!

Yours looks very nice.

Do you mask the wheels or clean the paint off afterwards?

Cleaned it off afterwards using a trix wheel cleaner.

I would also suggest the old fashioned way of, upturned loco...cotton bud and white spirit. You will find it removes a lot more that isn't visible! (thanks Jonathan Wealleans)

Both in tandem work very well. I find if I'm careful in application it doesn't require too much work. The Hornby model was easier to repaint than the Bachmann chassis - no way of removing the coupling rods from the Bachmann A4 without severe damage

Do you remove the coupling rods on the Hornby A4 Chassis....heck I don't even take the body off!

4464 is nearly ready for the final waft with the airbrush...and then is ready for photographs!

Remember my wheels started as green Tom (it's a Railroad 4472 Chassis) - have to paint the front and the back. I removed all the wheels and carefully painted them all, and refitted them,

I imagine each coat of the Humbrol paint gave far better coverage of the underlying colour than the Precision paint ever would have done. Humbrol enamel seems to be very good for density and opacity of colour.

Just one coat brush applied. It evens itself out really nicely on a grey primer coat. The precision stuff was awful (in my experience) as it never covered very well.

I suppose in my case, I was painting over a maroon type colour in the first place.
Anyhow, I've started now so don't wish to change.
