Return to modelling (OO LNER Pregrouping Constituents)

Hi all,

I have recently decided to return to modelling after several years. I was trying to work out when I last posted on (or even looked at) this forum. It has been a while.
Previously I was modelling mid 1930s LNER with no particular location. My specialty modifying locos. I have decided to change slightly the era from Jan 1922 to Dec 1923.
This will enable me to run most of my favourite LNER locos and have a bright variety of liveries and colour schemes.

I also plan to have enough locos in later LNER colours to enable me to swap between eras and still have some 30s stuff. This will enable me to run my A3, A4, B17/4 and buy one of the new Hornby P2s.

My question (yes I finally get there) revolves around the GEM D30 (Scott) kit that I recently purchased. I am hoping to eventually make this in NBR livery and I am wondering whether anyone knows where I can get transfers for the name (My son has decided it will be Dumbiedykes). I have found pregrouping transfers for freight wagons, and I think I can source the NB for the locos.
The other item I am unable to find commercially is the Yellow/Black/Red lining used on the ochre green passenger locos.
Does anyone have any ideas that will help?

I am not an experienced kit builder (having only so far built a Nu-cast Sentinel Railcar, a BEC D11 body kit and an old K's O4.) but I think I'll cope.
My RTR modifications included turning an Airfix 4F into a credible J11, a Wrenn A4 into a B17/5 on a Hornby chassis, Turning a Trix EM1 into the LNER 6701 and "Super?" detailing a Silver Jubilee set from hornby including articulating the coaches.

I am currently planning a scratch built Y9 using Hornby parts, and turning a pair of N2 bodies into an R1.

Forgive me but I had to ask. Did they have trains in Dec 1023?

You know, I have always thought that Hornby's LMS Stanier coaches were the basis of their LNER Silver Jubilee "representations" - don't the prominent roof ribs rather give the game away? Or are the Staniers also based on an earlier Hornby Mk 1 approximation? Confused!

Pretty sure I made the additional coaches from LMS ones and the mouldings matched.
I no longer have them..... But everyone knows the saying "it's my railway....."

As for the 1023.... Edward the confessor...... Obviously had fat finger syndrome.

Hardly in the category of some others here, but this was a first attempt many years ago.
The carriages were the main addition, although some detailing was undertaken on the loco including fitment of a seuthe smoke generator and working lights.

Looks very good despite the provenance of the coaches. What an amazing sight the original Silver Jubilee set must have been!

A long time before dyslexia was invented!

Odd that the spelling was usually Anglicised to "Canute" when I was at school, though I doubt if it was ever historically pronounced that way by those bearing the name. Might I be right in I imagining it is probably the same name as the modern Danish / Norwegian Knud?

Good morning all
It was always King Canute when I was at school.
There is Knut Larsson a writer (I think), and I guess that is the modern Cnut/Canute. Knud is probably of the same derivation.
The old Norse people would have used the Runic alphabet, in which C and K are very similiar.

It's amazing how the English speaking people want everything in English (Roman script).
My G/F's Grandfather was Chang Hseuh Liang using the Wade-Giles conversion and Zhang Xueliang in Pinyin. He made it easier by adopting the name Peter.

We, modellers, worry about use of curly sixes etc. Can you imagine the difficulties that Chinese modellers have with name/number plates, especially as numbers are written top to bottom.

Getting back to the modelling part of this thread.

I have decided to modify my Smokey Joe to one of the Dundee based NBR Class G (Y9) locos which will allow me to have the dome shaped spark arrestor sticking out the top. NBR 1091 (or 1092) as running prior to the addition of cab sides. Hopefully this will prove to be relatively simple first project back!

I still have to source a suitable stovepipe chimney and sort out whether these little locos were lined when the LNER took them into stock

Good morning all
After the short diversion into transliteration.
Are you going to build the Y9 with a truck tender? The Y9's are interesting locos in their own right, but look even more interesting with the small wooden tender.
Alan Gibson do some GER stovepipes which may be suitable if long enough.

A shame that you don't model in 7mm - Jim McGeown has just done a lovely little wooden tender kit.
