I have an Ian Allen pacifics book from the 60s (inherited from my father, I'm not old enough) and think the clans with Brit boilers idea was mentioned in there - will have a look when I go home tonight
Really like the 7MT 2-8-2 and the 8F with cutdown 9F boiler - not that they would have been needed, though ... <sigh>

BR Clans
I plan to do the Hughes and Fowler Pacifics and 2-8-2 designs in due course - again watch this space for these and the 'Harrison' Pacific

(Showing my ignorance here, to my chagrin) Harrison pacific?
Looked up the Clans when I went home - No direct mention of a Brit boiler ... I don't have an encylcopedic knowledge of these matters as I suspect you do, but I'm inclined to think you were dreaming of it - sorry! The description suggests the only significant weight difference between the 6MTs and the 7MTs was made by the boiler being smaller, so adding a larger boiler but keeping the smaller cylinders would seem a pretty silly step in terms of route availability, unless anyone else knows better?
All in all, one wonders why BR just didn't ship rebuilt Bulleid light pacifics to the regions that the 6MTs were intended for, or replicate the rebuilt locos in a new build order? The 'Clans' don't seem worthy of much love in my book.

Clans
From what I remember reading about the proposal to fit Britannia boilers to the Clans - its where I read it I cannot find now - the intention was also to bore out the cylinders - remember that the cylinder castings were the same for both classes.
The Clans were never used where they were intended but spent most of their lives on routes also used by the Brits - so it would have been a logical move.
The Harrison Pacitic - wait and see!

The first version of the BR Class 8P produced by the Derby Drawing Office under Freddie Harrison ?? A line drawing appeared in Stewart Cox's British Railwy Standard Steam Locomotives.(Showing my ignorance here, to my chagrin) Harrison pacific?
I'm particularly curious about the detail of the motion that actuates the outside piston valves. Cox says in his book that he could find no record of how the drive for the inside cylinder was to be provided.

Re: British Railways Clan Class 6P
Can I also recommend E.S. Cox's BR Standard Steam Locomotives book? It's got early versions of the Britannia class (among others) including a 4-6-2 version of the class 5...
In fact, if you're interested in locos that weren't, his books are all pretty good.

Re: British Railways Clan Class 6P
From what I've read in E.S.Cox's BR Standard Steam Locos, originally the Class 7 and Class 6 pacifics were only going to differ in the size of the driving wheels - 6'6" for the class 7 (Type 70), 6' for the class 6 (Type 71). There was also going to be a Class 5 pacific...Saint Johnstoun wrote:I seem to remember (or did I dream it) something about a proposal to fit the Clans with Britannia boilers. Any thoughts out there?
P.S. If members are interested, I have a number of BR Standard 'never weres' drawn up like my LNER never weres already posted in the forum - if anybody is interested I will upload these drawings.
