Tender for a Raven A2
Good morning all
Whilst having to spend some time at my G/F's while her broken wrist improves. I have been suffering for lack of modelling and doing some planning/research.
I have a DJH Raven A2 kit in my roundtuit cupboard and am thinking of fitting an eight wheel tender as IMHO it looks better in that configuration. The green book says the New Type A1/3 tender was fitted.
I have a spare Wills A3 tender (from fitting a loco with a GN Tender), which is wider than the 8ft quoted in the green book for a Non-corridor tender.
It shouldn't be too difficult to separate the tender sideframes from the sides, narrow the footplate and tender front/rear etc and reassemble into a tender with the correct width.
I have few pics of the A2 with the 8w tender as I don't have the Yeadon vol (I'm not going to buy a Yeadon for such a few locos that I like, and a lot of Thompson locos that I don't), and I was wondering if I'd be correct in narrowing the tender to 8ft acroos the sidesheets. It's difficult to decide from the green book if there is the noticable step between the chassis sideframes and the superstructure.
Any views, opinions, or information would be appreciated.

Modify one of the cheapo Mallard tenders . The Finecast version are heavy and horrible.

Re: Tender for a Raven A2
I have narrowed a couple of corridor tenders from different sources to make non-corridor ones, and I believe the correct thing is to narrow only the superstructure, not the fames or the soleplate. I'm sure Mick's logic is correct though, with a tender avaliable at £2.99 including a spare loco and a magazine, there's no case for narrowing a wide one. If beading is required just add it, fiddle with the shape of the sidesheets at the front if necessary too. Far better than (as I did) spending most of a weekend turning a tender into a kit, modifying the parts and then putting it back together.

Re: Tender for a Raven A2
Thanks for the views.
I don't know why I typed narrowing the footplate, as I have not intention of doing so. It wouldn't look right IMHO, it would give the appearance of a slightly underscale corridor tender.
I looked for the magazine including Mallard in supermarkets and newsagents in three local towns with no luck, before remembering that I had an unbuilt Wills tender. It may be because I live in a Southern Railway area, and the magazine distributors diverted the stock to north of the Thames.
Probably because I grew up in the austerity years just after the war, I hate wasting anything, and using a Wills tender that I already own, is better than not using it, I cannot think of many locos it would be suitable for. I also have another spare 8w tender (Alexander GNR version) that came in a job lot I bought a while ago, and I intend making new chassis sideframes and coping to convert it into the tender for my proposed P1 conversion.

Re: Tender for a Raven A2
It appears that you may live in Surrey and Dave Ellis (South Eastern Finecast) is possibly quite close. He will I am sure sell you a couple of sides at a quite cost. If you follow this path remove the tank top from one matching pair and the frames etc from the other pair. Assemble to complete. Alternatively it may be possible, if you work to "OO" standards, to merely reduce the width, I believe that this will still leave sufficient room for the wheels. Finally you did not indicate whether you tender has an etched sub chassis or is of the older version, this may need watching.
Re: Tender for a Raven A2
Of course, if you wanted to use an original NER tender. Dave Alexander provides a suitable kit.

Re: Tender for a Raven A2
Afternoon all
It's amazing how one's view changes. One year ago I commented on JW's workbench that an eight wheel tender didn't look right. Now I think that it looks better.
Pebbles is right, Dave Ellis at South Eastern Finecast is very good. He will supply any part from his range of kits, so is very useful for boiler fittings etc. Also, his GS 4200 tenders can be built in several variants, so if anyone wants one with a stepped out coping to fit behind Atlantic 3279's V2 resin casting, to produce one of the eleven V2's (4804-14) fitted with old J39/D49 tenders, then SEF supply them. His postal service is very good, it arrives the day after you contact him.
The tender I intend using on the A2 is the old type, without a proper chassis, but I do have a Comet 8w chassis available.
I guess that as the eight wheel tenders were built in the 1930's they were fitted with disc wheels.
The original A2 tenders were fitted to J39's, so perhaps I could use the tender from the DJH kit on a J39. It would mean another J39 as I already have one (J39/1) with a GS3500 tender, and one (J39/2) with a GS4200 tender, but there were nearly 300 J39's on the LNER. So the addition of one with a NER tender(J39/3) is probably realistic.
I now have a project for tonight, while my G/F is watching TV, of checking J39 tender changes and allocations.

Good morning all
Re: J39/3's
The J39's fitted with A2 tenders were all allocated to Newport on building (1934), but 1477 was moved to Selby in 1939.
There were two fitted with B13 tenders allocated to Neville Hill from 1937/8 to 1943.
So there is a suitable example that worked in the southern part of the old NER area.
Now what shall I do with the tender supplied with the J39?

It's built and primed, Arthur, but the loco hasn't been through the paint shop yet so it's waiting to be done at the same time.did you ever finish the one you got?
As it happens, using the loco on Grantham requires the Gresley tender so I'll be painting them both when the time comes.

Re: Tender for a Raven A2
That tender just looks like an afterthought, doesn't it? Totally out of proportion, to my mind. The big Gresley 8 wheel tender certainly helped with the appearance of the whole ensemble, as it were

Re: Tender for a Raven A2
Exactly the opposite of what I think (which was why I was going to replace the Gresley one).
Vive la difference.

Better sort out the NER tender's valance.
