Not 100% suitable unless adding beading I think (though not difficult). I've already got two versions of the A1/1 so I'm comfortable with them for now.marksouthcoast wrote:How about the A1/1.
A few people have suggested shed dioramas - I have a mind to make one with the cod doors opening for ash removal, or the hatches on the valances "open" for oiling the valve gear. So many possibilities for modelling with these A4 models. Glad they started with these ones and not the Coronation models.

I am sure I would not be alone in finding photos of the various conversions interesting please.
I have stripped my first Mallard loco body of the dodgy handrails, buffers and chunky chimney. (Six more to go!).
Not all the handrail knobs co-operated so I will have to drill one or two out. There will be filling whichever chimney I eventually fit.
Presumably a suitably long etched nameplate may hide the raised Mallard moulding, perhaps filed down first?
There are also rectangular patches on the firebox which need removing - a residue of the overhead live wire signs.
I read with interest that the numbering proved tricky to remove, and assume the lining was the same. Perhaps these could just be rubbed down a little and then lost under a coat of primer?
There are two mounting points inside the loco body. Whilst I think Simon mentioned that the front one aligns with the Bachmann chassis, (not sure it does with the Hornby version?), clearly the rear one needs to be removed altogether, and an alternative method found to locate the cab end as rowanj suggests.
I very much look forward to seeing how everyone copes with these issues. Good luck!

EM Fibreglass pen takes care of both numbers and nameplates, although im left with a raised portion where name plate was that will require a bit more attention. On one of my bodies the front buffer beam dropped off nothing that a bit of plastic weld cant cure.
Can anyone advise type of Chimney carried by Sir Ralph when it was destroyed at York im thinking of converting one shell into the 4-4-0 form she was towed back to Donny after the raid. Also does anyone make a decent set of lining to suit the garter blue.

More pics here - I will update the blog entry tomorrow with the full details of my conversion, using the latest Bachmann A4 chassis. I am also working on another conversion using the latest Hornby Railroad Scotsman chassis and tender as a basis to compare the overall look and build time/cost/running qualities.
Thus far it's been good fun. I am going to fit Maygib buffers, new handrails and a single chimney and turned brass whistle, and turn this one into 60006 Sir Ralph Wedgwood, in LNER garter blue but with BR branding and smokebox numberplate. Prototype two for comparison using the Hornby chassis will be 60007 Sir Nigel Gresley.

W1 conversion using Graeme King's resin parts.
Proposed streamlined V2.
2 x A4s upgraded with brass handrail knobs, resin single chimneys.
Buffers and whistles still to fit. The V2 and the A4s will be Apple Green.
Awaiting more handrail knobs and a few more parts to complete.

Fox do the LNER curves, Modelmaster do the BR Black/white version.

Only looked at the Tender so far , the inside need removing and lifting a couple of mm as too low . Mine has been filled rubbed down and inside reglued at a better height.
To fit a body to a current Hornby chassis you need to make a support for the front end to screw too as not available as a spare. Nameplate just need scraping flat the new one will cover it easily.

The V2 is very interesting, what/which chassis are you using please? It might just jump the que and be next after my C1 and look great in the line up planned

The body cut and shut is dead easy - take 9mm out just behind the front boiler band - the boiler top needs slightly reprofiling.

Amazing that a £2.99 magazine can create such a flurry of interest and activity!
This is becoming a very enjoyable thread! Thanks to everyone for sharing their plans and tips.
I tried to "do a Simon" yesterday, offering WHSmiths Hinckley £1.50 each to take the remaining 5 off their hands - I was politely told where to go! Obviously don't have his charm!
Still, I think 7 is enough!

Yes 2002 - I have also restricted myself to seven. Four already butchered, two still in their boxes, and one on static display as yet untouched, although I suspect it too will succumb! More bits arrived this morning so I now have to do a bit of chassis butchering - the chassis for the W1 needs a cylinder and valve gear change, and I have a green wheeled A3 chassis which will need same doing to fit one of the green A4s. As for the V2, it will have to wait until a suitable donor chassis is available.
