Gresley A1/3 front bogie details required
Hi guys
Can anyone help with images of the front bogie spring/shock absorber arrangement for the above loco types, an A4 may do. I'm in the final stages of building the front bogie for my 5" model and would like to get a clearer idea of this arrangement. I have searched the web but alas I can find nothing that shows this detail, in the photo's that I've found and there are many, this detail is blocked by the front stay.
Regards
Pete

Working on the assumption if you ask its either 'yes or no' i called into the NRM and asked if i could get some pics of the sliding cab window detail on Mallard so i could use it on my B17
No problem... However i didnt get a pic of the window either open or closed, ( cant remember which) so i sent an email to the NRM explaining my idiocy!!!
got a reply back with several photos taken by one of the guys. Top work!! plenty of Kudos to them
As 4472 is in there at the moment, ask if a guy working on it could do the same for you. as i said its either yes or no

Hi Ron
That's a brilliant idea, I hadn't thought of that, would you be so kind as to pass on to me the e-mail address that you used, I'm not sure who I should contact?
Kind regards
Pete

Pete,
I ent it to
search.engine@nrm.org.uk
Explaining my interest ( building live steam)
What i would like to know as no pics etc etc
Could anyone take some pictures of a,b,c etc
Thanks in advance
That should work
The alternative is a quick visit there and chat to one of the fitters. If you do take some pics of your work, that should be the magic ticket, might be worth sending one or two in the email just to get them hooked

Isn't 4472's chassis at Ian Riley's works at present?
Re: Gresley A1/3 front bogie details required
Hi Pete,
Attached photo of one of 60007s bogie axleboxes taken in 2012. Reminds me of the downside of working under steam locos.
I note you are building your bogie with top and bottom shock absorbers on the springs, and examination of the GA for the A1s and A3s shows this to be correct as built, but from 1931 the the bogies were altered to remove the swing links and had spring side control fitted, and changes to the springing all based on the D49 bogie. These had only one shock absorber per spring as shown in the photograph. I have no evidence that the top shock absorbers were removed at this time but it seems likely, so you will need to get a look at 4472, unless someone can confirm from direct knowledge.
Eddie

Hi Eddie
That's perfect, just what the doctor ordered... I had already noticed that 4472 didn't have the top shock absorber in some of the pictures that I have on file but didn't know the reason why, now I do. I guess I need to decide whether to follow suite which is simple enough, just need to thread the pins a little more and cut to size. If I had known this before making the 16 shocks I would have most certainly omitted the extra 8 shocks that I've now built, seems a shame to let all that work go to waste, mind you I could still use the lids to the shocks with the added lips to hold the springs central ( as discussed on the proboards forum).
Many thanks Eddie, you have saved the day yet again... perhaps from now on I should just ask Dr Eddie when I need help...
Many thanks
Pete

Pete,
Well done, and single shocks as well.
But there is something else - dust shields. See picture. The pacifics had similar attachments until they were fitted with AWS.
Thanks for the accolade by the way, but I can only claim BSc, and that is in Civil Engineering - albeit from the days when you had to do Thermodynamics and Electrical Engineering in the first year as well as Structures.
Regards

ah,,, yes you are of course correct.. thanks Eddie.. they are actually on the drawings for the swing link bogie... guess I should have realised that they would also be there for the spring bearing type as I've built... I'll get on it.....cheers...

Ok after a couple of hours with the guillotine, files and mostly drilling and tapping 10BA into hardened steel we now have the missing dust covers as kindly pointed out by 61962.
many thanks Eddie...cheers..
