I'm interested in the painting of the C7, as I have one nearly finished and which will require painting.
I have a small can of Precision Darlington green, but don't know when Darlington ran out of paint supplies and reverted to Doncaster green. Did the Darlington green last until WWII?
Paint aside, I like the thread.

As far as I know Darlington did their own thing probably till 1948.

This one is based on 1938 photos which had Darlington Type Painted Cylinder covers.

Have you had to make many changes to the kit, Mick?

New safety valves, dome , smokebox door ,cab fittings from Arthur K, scratch reverser rod. New whistle from Bradwell. New Tender body (done) from Dave Alexander which will have a 52F chassis when built.
Sadly no one does a decent chassis , so I have used the DJH battleship version supplied. Brakegear would have been nice but not worth the hassle. I have used a Comet bogie bracket hopefully it will then go round curves, (not tried yet).

Good morning all
Thanks for info on painting. I can quite happily continue painting Darlington locos in their green.
I've never found a suitable chassis to use in the C7. The nearest is the Gibson N15, in which the front two driving axles are correct for the C7, and the rear driving axle is spaced correctly for the C7 trailing axle. However, I wrote; "Not worth the bother" against it in my wheelbase notes.

Looks promising Mick. Is it worth thinning down the underside of the cab roof before you paint her to your usual high standard? So does it go around corners perfectly with the Comet bogie guide plate?

Cab roof will stay as it is, it is as horrible as the rest of the castings The problem is the roof has a quite complicated layout thinning will lose all the location points as well. Hoepfully when painted it blend in.


Yes Comet bracket works well without any problems on a trial run. The cartazzi was as usual a bit of a pain. I may try your A2 version in due course.

The C1 I have shown before has had a Comet bracket and a your (thanks) A2 type cartazzi truck added with much improvement.

Our Grantham mob (plus a man who is an expert in building locos and taking photographs) was discussing Z's and S3's a couple of weeks ago, specifically the problem of the cylinders being in the way of the bogie on DJH models. It occurred to me that whilst it would be a bit of a faff to do it, were you to cut away the whitemetal running plate above the cylinders and slidebars, replacing this with flat sheet plus thin strip for the valance, you could then move the cylinders up until almost 50% out-of-sight behind the deep valance (like the real ones) and potentially have more room for the bogie wheels.
