From a careful study of Trains Illustrated and Railway Observer between 1959 and 1964, there were several recorded instances of 04s, 02s and even an 01 south of Huntingdon on the GN main line. As the current owner of "Biggleswade", such loco movements are of great interest to me and justify my Bachmann 04 and forthcoming Heljan 02.

From the Hornsey footbridge after school 1957/8.

O2's 63934 and 63937, and O4/1 63626 apart from the three C13's shedded at 34E (disfigured with flowerpot chimneys) this was the first ex GC loco I had seen, and started a lifetime of interest in their locomotives.

Also seen during this period were two J39's heading south on passenger trains on the same morning, I believe they were shedded at 36A, and at Wood Green one of the 35A Ivatt 4MT's.

During this period most if not all of the 31B WD's were exchanged for O1's and they became common all over East Anglia until dieselisation made them redundant and they moved back north.

Hello Folks

BACKTRACK Vol 28 No. 4 of April 2014 had an article on 100-Wagon Coal Trains on the East Coast Route. Prodigious tonnages of coal were required by London and the article mentioned the P1 2-8-2s being the tool for the job to lift the normal load out of New England to Ferme Park from 80 10 ton wagons to 100 10 ton wagons. It mentions WD 'Austerity' 2-8-0s hauling 72 13 ton wagons (936 tons of coal) and the 9F 2-10-0s lifting 80 13 ton wagons (1040 tons of coal).
A table on page 208 for New England to Ferme Park lists an LNER Standard (class B) having 80 10 ton wagons assigned to an O 2-8-0. Your justification could be that if the LNER had a table listing that it is possible, then a motive power shortage or an urgent need could have meant you could use some license to say that an O could be found to form an ad-hoc Class B rake. The article says there was unremitting pressure to send empties northwards and even unbalanced V2s were pressed in to service. You could also justify an O finding itself down near/at Ferme Park on any working being commandeered to take empties northwards to new England. There is even a photo in the article showing an A4 taking a short coal train south from New England in 1962!
