GNR locos north of York in LNER days
After chatting with jwealeans at the weekend we discussed C1s working north of York my question is did goods locos such as J6s and O2s also work north of York. I seem to remember seeing a photo of an O2 working North through Thirsk once.
I'm specifically referring to the late 1930s.
Thanks and Merry Christmas.

Hi Tom,
Both the classes you mention worked north of York, but only during and after WWII.
So for the late 1930s I would say they were not generally seen north of York. Although one cannot completely rule out an occasional appearance. For a J6 most likely an excursion rather than a goods working? They were popular motive power for excursions further south.
There were quite a few J6s based at Doncaster in the late 1930s. The O2s generally were further south working between New England and Ferme Park (based at New England shed), or over the GN & GE Joint lines based at March.
Many of the New England O2s moved north to Doncaster from 1943.

If my memory is correct then I recall an O2 turning up at Gateshead in my trainspotting days. That would be late 40s or early 50s.

Not the 1930s, but summer workings through to Scarborough via York in the 1950s would have seen a large array of steam locomotives. Railway Memories No 10 by Stephen Chapman has images of LMS/BR Crab 2-6-0; GCR/BR J11 0-6-0 from Barnsley; LMS/BR 4F 0-6-0 from Saltley; LMS/BR Jubilee 4-6-0; LMS/BR Patriot 4-6-0 from Newton Heath.
A couple of shots show ex-GNR locomotives D3 4-4-0 in LNER days, and K2 2-6-0 in 1960.
Ex-NER C7 Atlantics were employed on unfitted express freight duties to Scarboriugh via Gascoigne Wood during their latter years in the 1940s, but don't have any images of the C1s that you mention.

G'Day Gents
Another class of GN locos were based on Ex NE lines in the 20's and 30's. I have a picture of D3 4348, entering Darlington with a train from Saltburn, in 1932, D3's 4349 & 4075 worked the Kirkby Stephen line and had bigger side window cabs fitted again in the 20's and 30's.

J6s certainly worked into Hull in the late 40s/50s. It seems highly likely that they reached York. I wouldn't rule out them at York in the 30s although probably not an every day sight.2750 wrote:Many thanks for the replies gents.

Re: GNR locos north of York in LNER days
Hi Tom
Manna's comments about GNR D3 4-4-0s lead me to check out details provided in Peter Walton's The Stainmore & Eden Valley Railways, published by OPC earlier this year. The book states that NER-built D23 4-4-0s were replaced by GNR D3 4-4-0s on the Stainmore line, and cites Nos 4075, 4077, 4347, 4349, 4350 & 4354 appearing between 1930 and 1931. The D3s were deemed unpopular with their crews, and were subsequently replaced by Great Eastern E4 2-4-0s from 1935 onwards, with the last E4 being returned to East Anglia by April 1942. The service was left to the NER J21 & J25 0-6-0s until the apperance of Ivatt and British Standard locomotives post war, with the last J21 working being the railtour of 1960, hauled by J21 0-6-0 No 65033.
The book doesn't state where the D3s were based, but does indicate that their E4 successors alternated between sheds located at Penrith, Kirkby Stephen, Middleton, Barnard Castle, and Darlington. Consequently if similarly employed, then a D3 4-4-0 certainly could have assisted a local service from Darlington to Saltburn in the early-mid 1930s.

The E4s which went north had their rather open GE cabs replaced with something more enclosed, which became known (imaginatively) as a 'Stainmore' cab. The example I run on Thurston still retained this when it went back south and until withdrawal.

Re: GNR locos north of York in LNER days
Happy New year's eve to everyone
D3’s on NER
I often make notes on the allocation of locos outside of their parent line, for possible numbers to be added to locos that I build.
The following D3’s were shedded at Darlington at some time in the thirties:
4071, 4075 4077, 4079, 4347, 4348, 4349, 4350, 4354
The following at Barnard Castle:
4075, 4313, 4347, 4349
The following at Middleton-in Teesdale:
4077, 4354
The following at Kirkby Stephen:
4349
It will be seen that 4349 was tried at several places, it was also at Hull in the thirties.

Re: GNR locos north of York in LNER days
NE railwaymen were notoriously difficult to convince that they should try new locos, witness the problems with the Tennant locos in the early years.
However the ex GNR D3's were on the Stainforth line for sufficient time that they all had modified cabs to allow them to work tender first over these lines which often had hard driving snow 4313 for instance had its cab sides converted in 1929, and was not condemned until 1935.

York had two C1s and a D2 in 1938, so I'm presuming there was nothing stopping these working North to Darlington beyond.
