5" gauge LNER 8 wheeled tender
Evening all
I had a request to post some more pictures of my live steam build so now that the tender is nearly finished here are a few of the 95% completed tender before i move on to the loco herself and forget to post the pictures as promised.
rear view first, the heating hose is a dummy but the vacuum hose is fully operational to allow full braking of the whole train.
General 3/4 view...
Lower chassis view to show the lining, the chassis is built following the prototype's design, axles run in half journals that are lubricated via the oil tray pads sitting in the lower half, the oil fillers seen here are fully functional. As are the springs, shock absorbers and brakes that are operated by two vacuum cylinders using an automatic braking system.
Finally the front view..the scoop gear is a dummy but everything else is working, handbrake, two water valves for the injectors, both coal doors, locker doors and water gauge.. think that's all. I will be adding a galvanised bucket that will be cut into the floor sitting under the water tap that can be seen just below the right hand ( as looked at) locker door.
There are a few things still to do... biggest of all being painting and lining of the body oh and I also need to fabricate a complete set of scale tools to fit on the various brackets and store in their corresponding lockers... last job will be to fit working lamps but I guess that's a good few years away yet...
Regards
Pete

If as I suspect the body is to be in LNER Green, the buffer shanks should be black with vermillion lining just inboard of the outer end. The lined buffer beam looks a treat.

I thought we had a separate modeling section?

Yes, but there's modelling and modelling - this is more like the real thing - just slightly smaller!37b wrote:I thought we had a separate modeling section?

Re: 5" gauge LNER 8 wheeled tender
hi guys
Thanks for the comments..
@2512... this has been a subject of discussion but I'm still not convinced this was always the case... I have no doubts about the engine having black buffer stocks, these are very easy to see in B&W photo's but the tenders seem to vary. 4472's corridor tender that she had until 36 was certainly black, however a photo of her with tender 5640 in 38 seems to show red buffer stocks. Add to this a picture in RCTS of another pacific from the same era were the stocks also look red tends to show that it's not such a clear case of all being black. Of course we could also add the recent pictures of the A4 gathering were there is a mixture of black and red buffer stocks, naturally i'm not including the BR livery loco's in this.
@ Dave... Hi.. sorry if I have put this thread in the wrong section, to me it didn't fit into 'model railways' but more to the point all of my requests for detailed help in this build have been in this section so it made sense to post here, as i said I'm sorry if I've broken any forum rules.
@ drmditch.. thanks for your kind words sir... I have tried very hard to get my model as close as possible to the prototype although naturally some things have to be different for practical reasons. The loco herself will be even more detailed although getting to the 95% stage will probably take another 5+ years.. but hey it's all fun..well most of the time...
Kind regards
Pete

Re: 5" gauge LNER 8 wheeled tender
evening all
Thought I'd add a picture of the bucket detail that I previously mentioned.. this will be it for the tender for a few months.. now I'll get on with the loco..
If I had known about this detail when starting I'd have made the tap functional, alas it's a bit late now to waste time on it but the water gauge is fully working so I could always fill the bucket using that.. just for fun of course. I will research the loco as much as possible to try and not miss any little details like this during her construction, I just love details.........
Kind regards
Pete

Thanks Rob... I've been following your coach build... very nice... I'd like to build some Gresley teaks to go behind this one day, if I live long enough that is..... mind you I'd need a flat bed truck to transport a whole Flying Scotsman rake of coaches...
