Border Counties Railway - Revival in EM Gauge

Post by russ »

I joined here as I am gathering info for building a steam ex-NER line in 7mm scale:

-my first layout since I left the hobby in my teens, was inspired by numerous 'Ian Futers' articles and his recent book.

Here's my play on 'Deadwater' - having used modellers licence to retain the Riccarton to Kielder section up until the end of the Waverley Route in 1969, to freight only.
- it worked as an ideal scenic test track for 'getting to know' EM gauge!
-appologies if you do rmweb you are going to have to look at these pics again!

The layouts full title is 'Deadwater Burn' - its 90 % Deadwater, but I moved one of the river bridges about half a mile closer to the station to add interest! and its open 10yrs too late! -

-sorry to those who would rather have seen a J39 etc. but Diesels are a much easier option to regauge- its why I'm looking at 7mm for the steam layout, the axles are square ended!

Looks very good - I like the run down look of the building, and the general green palette.

I'd be very happy if I my 7mm dabblings ended up looking as good :-)

Very nice indeed. I've long been an admirer of Ian Futers' work and the Border Counties line. Your vegetation captures the overgrown, damp feeling of Deadwater/Saughtree very effectively and I particularly like the backscene, which adds a plausible feeling of depth and gives a sense of "bigness". I think the building roof could do with looking slightly less ramshackle, but that's a matter of taste. Please post more pictures as your project develops!

Do you plan to add a Heljan class 17 Clayton when this becomes available, as I'm sure this type would have found its way onto the BCR had it remained open a little longer?
So - did anyone dare tell Stephenson, "It's not Rocket science"?

Thanks,
the building is the first time I have scratchbuilt anything, and if I'm brutally honest it was the hardest part for me, even compared to building the handbuilt point!
the windows took 3 attempts and the roof 2, and both aspects could be better! - I cold possibly improve the roof by sticking down a few of the slates again, there were meant to be a few rised/slipped ones, but possibly not that many.
Since these photos were taken the coal stage has also been finished off!

Yes A 'clayton' probably Hawicks D8506(got a good pic of that in a book) is a must have!
The backscene attracts alot of comments- its from a photo I took of the real location, mirrored and doctored in photoshop, it was done by a fellow 'RMwebber' in America, and posted all the way over here!

well it looks like you nailed EM, time to move up to the senior gauge! There's quite a few people here making tentative first steps into 7mm, so from a begineers standpoint we've got it covered!!

The layout now features on the 'Northumbrian Railways' site-

The Northumbrian Railways site is excellent, and many pictures of old locations, if you are into ex NBR/NER lines of the county I would recommend it wholesale!
