I quite like the term, unrebuilt. Southern or not, as it tends to most commonly refer to products of OVS Bulleid I think we can get away with it.

And despite the pedantic scholars of grammar telling us how incorrect that word is, replacing it by "original condition" is less accurate in many cases, because an unrebuilt West Country pacific was unlikely to be in original condition when photographed in the 1960s.

Original condition implies no changes or modifications from the day it emerged from the works after construction and painting.
Not pedantry but inaccuracy; 'unrebuilt' infers that it was rebuilt but subsequently modifications/changes were removed and the equivalent original parts fitted.

The NRM amongst others has 'returned' various locomotives to their 'original' or more accurately 'as built' condition - none of these is ever referred to as 'unrebuilt' and nor should any be. We all know that working parts are replaced, removed or modified during service, but that never infers that the recipient has been rebuilt, just properly maintained.

I'd go a bit further manna and say it's an 'outrage' to name a L.N.E.R. loco a name once carried by a G.W.R. Star?.

Not to me it isn't.

In my beleagured brain, rebuilt means rebuilt; unrebuilt just means not-rebuilt.

I suppose that is the problem with interpretation of the English language, and we will have to agree to differ.

I believe King of Scotland is currently vacant, if you're looking for a title?

Am I right in remembering that I read somewhere that the original choice of name for 71000 was to be Prince of Wales. Presumably to following the ill-fated 46202 Princess Anne. But the request made to the Palace was declined...?

71000 was to be Prince of Wales or Prince Charles (RCTS quotes Prince Charles).

Just a thought?. RAYMOND W. BUCKTON A.S.L.E.F. (1922-1995)

Probably wouldn't be to popular amongst some older British Railways commuter's from the 1960s & 70s i presume but Ray had a connection with the L.N.E.R. as a cleaner and a fireman at York i believe?.

No, the only problem is misinterpretation.

Maybe apt to call the locomotive "Prince Charles" then, given the Prince's association with Tornado?
