Some fascinating suggestions on Atlantic's thread, currently....

Hi all

In keeping with the LNER practice of naming loco's after characters in Sir Walter Scott's books . how about "THE DEVILS DICK"? He was a follower of the Earl of Douglas in the Fair Maid of Perth. It would go well with "COCK O' THE NORTH".

"Prince of Wales" - I don't think any of us guessed correctly!

Uh...what? Surely this name was on an A3 as well?

Bonnie Prince Charlie would have been more fun...

Can't say that I am sold on that name at all. I'll support it - I want to see a new P2 and this is the only project with the engineering expertise I'd trust to do it - but that name. Not sure about that at all.

Probably not...

I don't think it's a bad name - though the first thing that came to my mind was an LNWR class that also bore this title.

Yes the LNWR engine is the more famous, but there was also the A3 named after a Nazi sympathiser...

Although my suggestion of "Elizabeth of Glamis" might be more in keeping with the original names, the fact is, she's been dead for ten years. Perhaps her grandson (and heir) is more appropriate.

A lot of people complained about "Tornado" (or was it only a few loud people?) and the world didn't end, and "Tornado" has been a big success.

I like it..... Hopefully it may help get more media coverage and financial support too.

Good morning all
There was also a D11 named "Prince of Wales", and a B4 on the LBSCR.
I wonder if the two LNER Princes of Wales were ever in the same vicinity?

I can see one problem with this name which personally I like, that being that by the time the loco is finished it's very unlikely that Charles will still be a Prince.. very unlikely indeed...

I quite like the term, unrebuilt. Southern or not, as it tends to most commonly refer to products of OVS Bulleid I think we can get away with it.

And despite the pedantic scholars of grammar telling us how incorrect that word is, replacing it by "original condition" is less accurate in many cases, because an unrebuilt West Country pacific was unlikely to be in original condition when photographed in the 1960s.

Original condition implies no changes or modifications from the day it emerged from the works after construction and painting.

But there will almost certainly be a Prince of Wales though!

And I don't think it is that unlikely either. QE2 is getting on but I think she still has more than five years in her!

Afternoon all
When Charles becomes King, Prince William will become Prince of Wales, and presumably Duke of Cornwall. I don't know what will happen to the Dukedom of Cambridge.
