To set my 2014 modelling off, here is another A4 for the 'Future Project'
4486 'Merlin' of Haymarket shed circa 1938.

One small point about 2553 Prince of Wales; the backing plates for the coal rails were extended well behind the rear coal plate.
I was going to renumber/rename an old Wills A3 to 2553 Prince of Wales and display at a local pub, after fitting it with a coal rail tender, but only found out about the long backing plates after I'd painted it, so I changed my mind.

The Prince of Wales is a BR version, and I was given it by Tony Wright already numbered up, just for me to weather. I'll mention what you say though, very interesting.

Is this not correct on Hornby's Gresley A1? Think it will be something I ignore as it's going to reduce what locos I can use significantly.
Have you any photos of the differences?

I feel a bit of a heel for mentioning now.
The extension would merely be a 11mm longer backing plate (2ft8ins).
I don't know if the Hornby backing plate extends beyond the rear transverse division plate.
A thin strip of plasticard fixed on the inside of the coal rails would do.
Fig 21 in the RCTS green book vol 2A shows it.

I think I know what you mean now, does it make the coal space bigger?
Think I'm happy to ignore it to be honest. It could be one of those things that the LNER altered by the late 1930's....plus tenders did get moved around.

I like MERLIN, in its prewar condition. They look so good with the side skirting intact, and the original single chimney.
I chose 4486 MERLIN for my Wills A4 of c1974, which is getting a bit long in the tooth now.

It was one of my reasons to moving to pre war. I had wondered why A4s did little for me, after seeing the Great Gathering I realised why.... The original condition is just sublime... I also quite like the A4s in apple green. I'm intending to have two!

With the awful weather of recent months (although thankfully we haven't had the flooding that other parts of the UK are suffering from), photos out side have been near impossible. I was then taken a back by the fact the sun was shining, and realised 2575 'Galopin' hadn't had any outdoor photos.

So here she is in the winter sunshine. I've always liked the name, and she does have a slight claim to fame. At an unknown date in 1938 she covered a Coronation failure. I used a 1939 photograph of her at Ripon, which clearly showed the smokebox (the door straps) faded under dirt and grime, which I think contrasts nicely with the apple green boiler.

Both 2575 and 4486 were given a run at Ormesby Hall Model Club last night. I'll be there at their Model Railway Weekend (April 5th-6th), demonstrating weathering.
