I quite agree.Atlantic 3279 wrote:As this is supposed to be an LNER forum and the P2s proper were only ever seen in proper LNER green livery I feel fully justified in saying that any attempt to paint 2007 in a horrible fantasy BR livery could only count as an act of tasteless stupidity or outright vandalism!
So what shall we name the new P2?

What about an unrebuilt W1?earlswood nob wrote:I'd like to see a copy of the rebuilt W1 to follow the new P2, but I doubt if that will happen.

No no, I should apologize for the blue P2 - though I do honestly doubt that 2007 would stay in apple green

It eats into some, if not all of the 'mainline' locos but it's evidently rather rapid in 60163's case in that she's only five years old. She has already had a new drag box and I've been told that the cartazzi truck isn't in the best of shapes either.
Off topic I realise, but I must feel this should be raised. I have spent the afternoon in the company of David Elliot, the man who basically engineered 60163. He wishes for it to be known that the frames are not in any way cracking or cracked (if they were 60163 wouldn't be in service) plus there is nothing wrong with the cartazzi truck.

Therefore my source has been telling me a load of cow cookies. My most sincere apologies.
Incidentally, this P2 build is now more in my favour, and my source is less!

I can confirm that Dave Elliot said that the alleged A1 problems were a load of old Tommy Rot.
As I have learned to my cost on some occasions, it is best to be sure of matters before claiming to know something. The odd thing is that as age increases the willingness to acknowledge that one's ever increasing "knowledge" may still not be the "whole truth" seems to increase. I can remember being younger and thinking that I knew a lot. It is interesting to see the fence from both sides, although I'm sure that the younger generation cannot possibly believe that the older generations once thought the way that they do now.

There's an old saying that goes something like "a lie is halfway round the world before Truth has got its boots on". This is especially so in the Internet Age. I'm pleased that David Elliott has been able to kill the rumours about 'cracks & Cartazzis', but the problem is that not everyone who views forums has main line steam's best interests at heart, & froth posted on messageboards can cause trouble for no good reason.
Getting back OT, but with one small detour... I agree that the only proper livery for 2007 is Apple Green, although seeing as she'll be built at Darlington, will it be the Darlington shade? As far as the name is concerned, I think it's already decided. I look forward to the announcement in due course, as well as the opening of the 'little guy' covenanter system, as I don't have a spare £1000

Couple that with 71000's Harrison designed middle big end and a true winner should emerge!!S.A.C. Martin wrote:Interesting note on the front end of the possible no.2007 from the A1's website:
Derived drive for the centre cylinder - Thompson-esque!Cylinders and valve gear: The idea to model No. 2007 on Cock o’ the North meant that rotary valve gear was preferable. Some changes may be made to the proportions of the cylinders to compensate for the increased boiler pressure available from the 250lb/sq in diagram 118A fitted to Tornado. However, the Lenz gear used on the original offered only limited cut-off settings and may have contributed, in part, to No. 2001’s high coal consumption. The Trust is therefore actively considering British Caprotti valve gear using a derived drive for the centre cylinder. This valve gear was perfected in its application to No. 71000 Duke of Gloucester and offers infinitely variable cut-offs, although the 71000 SLT is still developing and refining the gear.
But it makes perfect sense, given the previous experience with Tornado, and hopefully whatever can be gleaned from 71000's palpable success story in preservation.
NOW im getting interested
as far s the names concerned, when you remember the LNER named 4 A2s after constituent companies, how could a new P2 be called anything but

LONDON AND NORTH EASTERN RAILWAY-------28 letters
COMMONWEALTH OF AUSTRALIA-------23 letter
That would be one heck of a big nameplate (half way down the boiler)

... which was listed in the latest "Railway Magazine" (there's a feature article on the P2 and the resurrection projects).
Also listed was my "Thane of Glamis" which personally I think is more appropriate. Both have Macbeth connections, but Glamis is along the route and has royal connections. Cawdor is privately owned and as a tourist attraction lives almost entirely off Macbeth!
I thought "Elizabeth of Glamis" and "Monster of Glamis" would also make suitable Glamisian choices! "Monster of Glamis" is probably a slanderous name but it would mirror "Wolf of Badenoch" quite nicely.
Apparently a "high profile" name has already been chosen.

As a guess, given the high profile RAF link of Tornado, I am willing to bet the name of the new P2 will be "Lightning" after the new F35B Lightning II jets.

The name is embargoed until Thursday morning.
This is where my different time zone might actually come in useful: lner.info might be the first to publish the new name...
